Stray dog

An irresponsible neighbour of ours owns a very cute but scruffy little dog :) which is truffed out on a morning and left to run the streets and gardens.

I am really annoyed about this as I own three pedigree dogs two of which are breading bitches. I take great care with them and they are well kept and always secure within my property.

However, over the last few day the neighbours dog has found a way into my garden by getting into our nextdoor neighbours garden and the jumping down a level into ours and is bothering the bitches. He can jump down okay but he can't actually jump back out as it is too high for him to jump up. As we don't actually know where the dog lives the only thing we can do is put him out of our garden, which is getting quite annoying now, but sure enough he finds his way back in.

Should I take him to the police?
Does anyone have any advice.

Re: Stray dog

Tie a note to his collar the next time and raise the height of your fences/walls so he can't get in?

Would you take it on a long walk

You mean spanish practice and dump it somewhere to starve:thumbdown:

Re: Stray dog

I certainly wouldn't do that Jacktoo. I'm too much of a dog lover. That's why I asked the question should I take him to the police. I don't know how to deal with it so the dog doesn't suffer. It's not his fault. I really want to teach the owner a lesson though.

or feeding it some starfish off the beach.......
((BTW this is not a nice way to do it but for feral animals sometimes the only way)

Re: Stray dog

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not a ferrel dog, It's someones pet. I don't want to punish the animal for it's owners shortcomings.

Does anyone know what the police will do if I take it there.

report the matter to your town hall as most have a concejal protectora de animales. Elspeth

Aren't there bye-laws against stray dogs in Spanish towns? In France you can indeed complain to the Town Hall and they deal with the matter.
(In France, the police and gendarmerie don't want to know, unless it's a dangerous dog, and I imagine the Spanish Police would be the same).
Good luck, anyway!:)

Re: Stray dog

Perhaps the thread is misleading people.
It is not a stray dog but has an owner, not a very responsible one clearly and it must be a real nuisance especially if your dogs come into season.

Some of the suggestions on here sound rather drastic, pity you couldn't take it to a vet and get it 'fixed' so he couldn't bother any other female dogs.

The owner may think he's gone walkabout for a day or so and would be none the wiser!

but of course, it will cost! Plus the fact, he could just be one of many!

polly.walker Feb 28th 2010 5:19 am

Re: Stray dog

Yes thank Casita, you are quite correct, sorry for misleading people.

The dog isn't actually a stray it is staying, it does have an owner. I wish I knew how it was as the dog is regularly spotted on the streets on our urbanisation. I would gladly report him to the authorities.

Complain to your Town Hall, if possible naming the owner! Can't your immediate neighbours add their complaint, or does he just make a bee-line for your bitches and they aren't bothered by him?
That's all you can do, apart from putting some sort of barrier to stop him jumping into your garden... When our neighbour's dog is on heat, there are inevitably at least 5 village dogs standing guard outside her gate and I have to make sure ours doesn't join them!
This is one of the drawbacks of having female dogs, I'm afraid...

Re: Stray dog

tbh dont think the town hall would be interested but you coudl try

in our village dogs often wander the streets during the day and no one bats an eye ..............suppose they just accept it happens

It’s always important to get a timely remember in life that there are people you would not wish to live next door to, you know the kind, heroes that would wish to harm a little dog.

To reply to the OP, build your fence up so that the frisky little dog can’t get into your garden.

Re: Stray dog

Thanks to all for the interest.

To those of you who have suggested I build my fence higher. It is already over 6' high
The problem is the litlle dog gets onto the top of it via next doors garden then jumps down
I am managing to separate my dogs in another part of the garden, but the little dog is then stuck because he can't just back up because the wall is so high
I am constantly putting him back. It's really bugging me now it's been nearly a week now

Put something on the top of your fence so it cant jump on it?? Its sad, but the Spanish do seem to let their dogs roam everywhere - they kick em out in the mornings and off they go, even in the towns. I'm often bemused by the fact that on several occasions I've seen dogs walk up to a zebra crossing and cross there - like they know thats the place to cross the road!!

In my area, both the campo and the nearby town there are dogs everywhere, either ferral or owned - some have collars, some dont, but they all just roam about - it seems thats how it is here!

Re: Stray dog

to the OP

in the Round Town News this week (p14) there is a letter about registering dogs at the police Station.

Someone I know asked at Rojales police station on Monday & the answer was YES.

maybe this new rule will help you.

There used to be a really nice guy on here who took in stray dogs and cared for them.... once he even gave Mitzy a roof over his head.

Re: Stray dog

It's only a dog. It doesn't need shooting or taking to the nick. Have a word with your neighbours, maybe two or three times if need be. If they don't stop it escaping then you must denounce them. It's the only fair way. Then the dog doesn't get done for the owners stupidity. My friends dog kept escaping and they got denounced. Now the doggies don't escape. It's not like they're mis-treating it right? So they don't need to be reported for that. Only for it getting onto your property and leading your dogs astray.

i take my white husky max for walkies round and out of our village three times or more a day and i have seen an increase in stray dogs lately.
i try to be a responsible owner, max is always kept on a lead(huskys are famous for not returning if let off the lead to run free!!),i carry a bag for the poopies etc. but our calles are littered with dog crap. i am fortunate in the case that i pass the guarda civil station every day and wave to who-ever is inside(and always get a good smile and wave back). so when it comes time to apportion blame for the dog mess, and denuncias are flying about,i have my witnesses.
on another note, our yearly village calendar has a rather strapping man and white husky going walkies on the october page...guess who???

You are only allowed to shoot dogs on your property if they are posing a threat to you/other people or your property ,ie other animals .
This is assuming you have the relevant licenses to posses arms.

I doubt you could claim a tiny dog was a threat so I would not recommend it , just put it in a box and take it to to a vet , some are payed by the local townhall to look after / re home /put down animals.

Re: Stray dog

Is everyone mising the point?? It isn't stray.. It's the neighbours dog.. What should be done about the neighbours.. Not the poor little dog.. That's like someone taking your toddler to the workhouse because they found it in their garden. Surely you would prefer them to come round and say.. "Hey, your dog keeps getting on to my property and making passes at my dogs. Please can you keep it on your land as mine are special breeding dogs and I don't want them tampered with". "Thanks, would you like to come round for a coffee and I'll show you where it gets in and stuff"..

I quite like the idea of a polite note attatched to its' collar. Sounds a good way to start don't you think?

It's better then a bullet through its neck..:(

OP says that the owner isn't known so having a word is not possible. Note on collar is a good idea.

How do they know it's a neighbours dog then?
Someone must know. If not, do you think it could be followed home?
What would you put on the note too?
It may be the dog of a madman/woman.
I wouldn't like the idea of someone knowing who I was if I didn't know who they were if you get my drift. Some people are just plain crazy and don't care.:(
