I remember a TEFL tutor who had a class consisting 2xNepalese, 1xChinese, 2xPakistani, 1xIndian and a couple of other nationalities I have forgotten.
Couldnt speak a word of their languages but got them talking and writing in English from 3 hour weekly sessions. At the end of the course they all took a charabang to the seaside and used their English.
Wasn't that a programme on TV

might have been, but I don't remember any cameras there.
I prepared some of the teaching aids/graphics and also the map from town to seaside as well as a map of seaside with a few pictures

I have to say I was impressed with the teaching to take such a disparate class that far

but .....

One in Marbella advertises every few months.
The people who usually do the TEFL type jobs are usually sharing flats or such, like starving artists, jobbing actors, musicians, models etc, who dont earn a regular wage, TEFL as a long term career is laughable in most cases, but as a stopgap into the "adult working world" it serves a purpose.

Fine for a year or 2 larking about, or as a back up to a proper wage earning partner, but for a family man/woman lacking in all aspects.

A bit like being a paper boy or pizza delivery person, not usually a lifelong job...........

Ok so i see its a v split view on whether its a good thing to move over or not! I know that its not something that will be taken lightly, i will not be jumping in without thinking it through especially considering i have a 2.5 yr old to think about. I will come out in Sept as planned and see what there is or isnt on offer. We were looking at Gibralter for places to work but not to live. If it doesnt work out i know that i will be moving away from the area i live in the UK.
Sorry again to have sparked up such a debate

Yeah good for a gap year, a few hours of not so strenuous work, a bit of minimal preparation, plenty of free time for the terraces and tan top up, short hours, speaking your own language,a few bob in your pocket, a doddle really.

In fact I just might do a year myself......

Serious, on a Friday night? I'll try it for a few minutes.

For various reasons I knew the manager of a local CAM bank rather well. It was a major branch and she was in charge of allocating mortgage funds to developers and private individuals.

Once I knew more about the operation, I closed my account and moved it elsewhere. Mortgages were granted to anyone, even the most unlikely applicants, without any checks whatsoever, provided they came via a certain local estate agent.

I knew four years ago that the whole edifice would come crashing down, the local Mercedes dealer couldn't get the cars in fast enough and I've seen a dozen people having breakfast in a local cafe, all dressed in Armani suits.

I did see one particular mortgage application and it made me laugh so much I spilled my coffee over it. It sailed through and is one of the many properties now abandoned and on the bank's books for a value that makes me laugh every time I think of it, or drive past it.

This explains some of it:

there is no need for you to apologise, it is for the members of BE to apologise to you for going off on tangents, going completely off thread and more importantly being rude to a new member of BE.

just remember that Gib has its problems with access, this can add to the travel in and out, especially if the Spaniards decide to block entry again, making for a long day - I used to rep in the UK and rarely saw my daughter Mon-Fri.

just keep looking, decide where is right for you not the numpties floating around this forum who know better than anyone else. It is your life, you will be very cautious because of the kids and their futures.

good luck and please keep coming here, asking more questions but most importantly letting us know how things work out for you. we look forward to your input in the coming months and years
kind regards

Not really, if you look at the bigger picture, Spain's problems are minute. Refinancing the banks is only a paper exercise, the UK is about to print another 50 Billion, almost for the fun of it. The ECB is a lot bigger and will start 'printing' this weekend to bail out Spain.

I meant to finish off my account of the 'funny' mortgage, but forgot. The applicant was only a holidaymaker, he went home the owner of a detached villa with a bank valuation of 275K. Nobody lost on the deal, apart from the CAM shareholders.

Some 80K was shared out in cash to the people concerned.

The way I read that article is that the Spanish banking system is corrupt from top to bottom, was, and therefore still is, run by rank amateurs who haven't a clue what they are doing apart from being corrupt and running away with other peoples money. Only a paper exercise? Sounds to me like there are severe structural problems that need sorting.

Also we are hearing the figure of 100 billion as being needed to bail out the banks...

I am asking myself why this is the first mention of Gibraltar in this thread. It's all been about Spain. I suspect that if the OP had mentioned that they would be looking for work in Gibraltar, the tone of the answers might have been different. I wonder why she didn't...

Corrupt from top to bottom - sounds about right. Exactly like our MPs in the House of Parliament. Or the House of Lords. Or Prince Andrew in our Monarchy.

It's the way of the world.

Was not being "shady" by not highlighting the exact areas we are looking at. Gib is one yes but we are looking at other areas too. I wanted the overall picture
