Most of the country is particularly dry this year. Reservoirs are at best at only 58% capacity.
I guess most people in Spain using this site live along/near one of the many Costas and so may not be aware of the lack of rain that the country has experienced since the start of the year. The severe storms that have blighted the Mediterranean this winter might have misled people into complacency.
Here, in Bizkaia (Vizcaya) as in Galicia, we had 25litres on 1st April & then nothing till a few days ago; and this last December 2016 here we had a mere 22litres for the whole month, compared to a whopping 520litres in 2014.
We've recently had some rain, but alarmingly also cold weather. Many people here woke up to see their potato crops 'burnt' due to the cold snap. Galicia has even had problems with forest fires.
All I can suggest is for us to be very aware of the water we use such as when brushing teeth or using sprinklers or even washing the car. And those of us who still believe in God might spare a thought in prayer.

We have had similar weather in central Italy. Amost no rain for 12 months. We had a warm February and March then a freezing April. My outdoor tomatoes and zucchini killed by frost at the end of April. I blame Trump.

Down on the costa blanca we have had drought for about 4 years,in fact I believe there was talk of buying water from the north of Spain. Then last month we had,in some places, torrential downpours over several days.I stopped growing tomatoes & beans a few years back as it seemed to cost more in water & effort than buying them at the market.I expect Philat is used to annual forest fires as we are(I say"forest" which is mostly scraggy pines!)but am surprised about Galicia.Although I remember passing through once on a coach journey in northern Spain & saw lovely wooded areas. It may be global warming but,YES,let,s put it down to that man in "the white house" Good idea.

I always find this a very confusing topic. I keep hearing about the drought in the north or how the farmers of Murcia feel badly done by, water wise, but whenever it prompts me to have a look at the official storage figures I can't see the link. Maybe it's just the way it's expressed - you can say reservoirs are at only 58% of capacity or you could say reservoirs are nearly 60% full.

One of the issues in Murcia seems to be the amounts of water they pour onto the many golf courses that they have there.

The article was in El Correo on this last Friday 28th April. I have a link but it may not let you open it unless you have a subscription! I did cut the article out & could send you a scanned copy if you wish.

The figures came from "la reserva hidraulica de España".
Yes, I'd rather hear 'nearly 60% full too.

It's rather like is the glass half full or half empty!I live north of Alicante so maybe our water shortage has a lot to do with tourism.Living along the coast from Benidorm I hear often particularly British tourists, going on about needing to have a bath daily.Wow that,s something I haven,t personally had for years!
