Default Spanish Driving Licence Query

I have a friend considering taking out Spanish residencia.
What is the current situation regarding changing another EU country licence for a Spanish one.

Is it still necessary to take some sort of test and if so what does it entail precisely, also what costs if any are involved ?

She claims to have paid extra for an international licence but I presume this is only for temporary use when visiting other countries.
Is that correct ?

It's the same as it has been for ages. Have a look at the sticky thread where it explains the procedure.

There is no driving test involved. You may have to have the normal medical but that seems to vary depending on where you go to exchange it.

There is no requirement to exchange it, but most residents prefer to do so.

... it's certainly very handy as proof of ID. Whilst it's not really, many, many places accept it as such.
