Well that's a thought. So thinking along those lines I suppose it would be a case of transferring the car to UK plates (without the car) I wouldn't know the routine for that or whether it would even be possible.

I would have thought there would be some sort of examination of the car being necessary re headlights etc.

Why would you want to UK register it??big expense for nothing!!

Just get export an certificate from traffico and then forget the whole thing, job done as they will no longer have any interest in the car or owner!

Sounds too easy - I wonder if anyone has experience of getting an export licence from Trafico - will inform the troubled parents of the advice. Thanks Rotor

Cant you do a baja at the Town Hall?

Only wondering if there is a way to declare the vehicle is not being used on the road in Spain and therefore not liable for circulation tax.

Thanks everyone, all advice and suggestions is being passed on so if there is a successful outcome to this will certainly post it here. At least it may help others unfortunate to find themselves in the same situation or at least to warn them of the pitfalls of not getting the correct documentation.

In the uk when you scrap a car you get a certificate of destruction issued from the scrap yard and Dvla .I know this as im in the motor trade and my friend owns a scrap yard, do you have any paperwork for the car and if so can the car be traced via dvla , if it was taxed here it must of had a uk registration number . If I can help let me know , Andy

Around here you can, someone I know sold a car and the new owner did not change it over.
The old owner kept getting bills for the old car along with the new car, after telling the clerk over a two or three year period that they had sold the car a long while ago, the clerk one day said "ok car gone from records".
No cost to them and no more bills, and no more reminders about the years still owing
