Something fishy......

Re: Something fishy......
Bacalao is the Spanish version of Cod but for me it doesn't really compare with N.Atlantic Cod.
It's popular with Spanish families at Eastertime, though I didn't find it very pleasant at all, but maybe their cooking methods didn't help either.
Wouldn't have thought it to be anything similar to Panga which I've also tried and found slightly more pleasant.
I've seen a lot of warnings on various websites of the dangers of being poisoned by Panga from polluted waters in Vietnam, however I've also read that it's regularly used on the children's school meal menus here in Spain.

Lots of warnings on eating too much fish, especially high mercury levels. 80% of swordfish exceeds the legal limit for cadmium! Can't beat a good healthy med diet!

Re: Something fishy......
My hatred of panga is well known in my social circle.
I was well aware that it was being sold at a venue not far from my old home. A friend went in recently... and saw that "local fish" was being advertised. She asked what it was and was told it was panga. She explained that panga is certainly not a local fish. The answer she received? "Well we bought it in a supermarket locally"
I kid you not.
Loving our local fish counter in Mercadona these days. So much more selection than in Lanzarote... and at great prices too. Been overdosing on mussels recently at around €1.30 a kilo.

Re: Something fishy......
My local Mercadona had a good range of fish. I was put off by the fact that ten minutes before closing time the counter still had a lot left. Look at it closely and a lot has been tossed in the freezer and put back on sale...fresh my arse

Fish needs to be looked after and fresh. Again, you need to find a good market stall or pescaderia!

I bought some Langostinos from Consum a while back, they were still wriggling and squirming about on the counter.
Can't say fresher than that.

Re: Something fishy......
Thanks Mr Dasterdly.
There are arguments for and against Panga. It's a personal choice, and not one that should be thrust upon others - either way around. Personally I choose never to eat it again. If others wish to do so... that's up to them.
I'm one of those people that will eat things blindly... and enjoy them. But as soon as I find out anything iffy - the choice is often made to remove those things from my diet. Haven't eaten from a particular fast food chicken chain for 8 or 9 years now because I once saw a video about how the chickens were treated. Mind you, I eat fast food so rarely anyway... so it's not like the other chains are getting my hard earned centimos instead. I also turned down a very well paid position at an abattoir because I didn't want to stop enjoying a juicy fillet steak, or a bacon sandwich. I'd rather live in ignorance.
Conversely, since moving to Spain, I have demolished animals and parts of animals I would never have dreamed of back in Blighty - and loved every bit! Latest of those was pigs' cheeks... probably my new favourite dish! Not sure I will ever get used to the sounds of a pig at a matanza though. I see "porky" next door is being fattened up for the next one as we speak.
Sorry... heading off topic.

Looks a great book! Shame it's not available on Kindle or I'd have got it straight away. xx
