Smelly Air Con
Cleaned the filters but there is a weird vinegary smell being omitted from the units. Any ideas?

Mould/fungus is growing in there. After using AC you should always blast heat through to dry out the pipework.
Try running it on hot for a while, but probably too late now may need to get it cleaned out/replaced.

Maybe it's mould in the heat exchanger. Running it flat out on hot for a few hours might cure it. Or someone might know a chemical you could clean it with. Also it could be a partial blockage in the water catch stopping the water running away freely.

Will I have to use an air con specialist to do that? And what would I need replaced?

try running it hot for a while to see if it helps, but if it doesn't (which to be honest is unlikely), yes you will need an aircon specialist or competant garage (in Spain....ha!)

Any idea cost wise what I would be expected to pay out? Ballpark figure? I really have no idea and I am sure he will see me coming!!

Sounds like it needs a proper service using the right chemicals to clean it, there is also something called smelly jelly which can be put inside the unit which gives off a lovely lemon smell.

Yes per unit but depending on how many units engineers might do a deal

While I am on a roll here, how often should air con units be serviced and could this problem been avoided?

at least once a year but depending on use reccomendation is twice a year. Having them serviced makes them more efficent and cuts down on major componets breaking down.

Re: Smelly Air Con
Just take the cover off, clean the heat exchanger and check the outlet is not blocked. 10 minutes work, but, I can't believe someone would come out and do that for 35 €. They'd have to be desperate.

I guess that makes me desperate then, since I don't even know what a heat exchanger is!! I know it is hard to believe but us girls do not know everything (especially when it concerns the insides of air con units)!!
