Re: Sky playing up
Hopefully The Guy will be along to help, but it sounds very similar to the problem I was just about to post about, namely that my Spain sky provider has been VERY (I know I'm 'shouting', I'm VERY cross!!!) ..... slow about getting the new Sky cards everyone in the UK was supposed to be getting.
I'm not even getting ITV or BBC 1 at the moment, & very much want to cancel my payments.
My plan - if it will work - is to arrange myself a Sky subscription at a UK address & bring the Sky card over here. Hopefully that will work & I'll not be beholden to any lackadaisical providers over here charging the earth for a cr*p service! Sorry rant over.......... and btw, The Guy's worth his weight in Sky cards for the help he gives us all. Crawl over now, too!

Firstly the "insert you sky card" message usually appears when , belive it or not, the card is not inserted corretcly, or in the wrong slot. on all sky boxes there are two slots..one viewingcard and one "interactive card" slot. so first thing it to make sure your card is in the correct slot - some newer design boxes have the card slot under a flap bottom right of the digibox.
If you have, then unplug the box, take the card out, restart the box, go to sky one and you get the insert card message, so insert the card and hopefullyt sky one will appear.
You dont need a card for ANY bbc channels...and only for half a dozen itv1 regions....so if you are not getting these then maybe there is another isssue with your system...
BBC ITV C4s are free to air.
Five Fiver Five USA are free to view.
I am assuming that you mean free to air and not free to view channels.
you can always ask your card supplier to change the exisitng account to your uk address - make sure you have all the passwords and account details...and when they say this is done your uk address should start to receive the monthly sky mag....of course i am sure he will charge for doing this....
thats a heluva lot of cards!!!
Depends on how his process is working...he may have a load brough over but maybe your is not in there...you will know when your new card has been issued as you will see the "insert your new sky card" message on the screen....until then dont worry...
Yes. Yes and Yes.
Yes they have 12 or so million sky subscriptuion cards to change...so it takes a while and are doing them in batches...most scottish and irish address have, apparently had theirs, and now the UK..i have no idea as to the "foramt" of them being replace - uk regions by regions, surname (cant be as I have mine yet my pa in the uk, whos address i borrow!) has not had his yet!!

Are new Sky cards being delivered already in the UK? If you take out a new Sky subscription is is automatically a new card? Anyone know?

I wouldnt hold your breath for your SKY installer(assuming he supplied the original) to supply the new FTV cards, firstly they are usually gained through a wholesale 3rd party supplier in Spain, secondly he will have to pay for them from another 3rd party supplier in UK , so therefore so will you, your locally (Spanish Installer supplied) card will probably be registered to a non existent address in the UK so the chances of you getting a new one is low.
The FTV cards supplied out here usually come from a UK installer/SKY provider, then the spanish wholesaler and then your local installer, then to you, And each one will charge the next in the chain.
And finally I have been harassing the local agent for months on this and the message is still the same, we dont know if we can get any yet!!

Re: Sky playing up
What experience have others had re. getting information about their new Sky cards, ie
being warned in advance they would need one (just in case they hadn't seen one of the million ads, but the principle!)
being told if/that there would be an additional fee for obtaining the card
being told how they would obtain the card
being told when they would be getting the card
being told they may lose channels in the run-up to getting the card
finally getting their card.
.... & if there was a fee, how reasonable/exorbitant was it?
You've guessed it, we've been somewhat (!) disappointed in how communications have(n't) worked in our case.
.....& re the third party suppliers mentioned, is that all legit? how do they get the cards? Don't they have to be encrypted or something therefore they must be virtually direct from Sky or at least through a recognised source or they wouldn't work??

Re: Sky playing up
This is the problem with not using your own Uk address and using an address from the "card supplier".
I do not think any "agents" have been telling their clients...its up to the clients to contact them....and dont forget that a few installers have "gone walkabouts" and left many clients in limbo as to what to do with their cards!!!
normally this iwll be when the "insert new card" or "this is the worng caard for this set top box" appears on the screen on all channels.
not all agents used to charge a yearly fee...but now they are...
there are many "tricks of the trade"" to get a supply of sky card for expats...i am not going to go into them...suffice to say a house in the uk at 123 acacia avenue may have 500 cards registered there....!!
you will not loose all channels...just the pay tv ones....if youdo not get a new white card.the free chanenls like bbc itv ill still be available.
I have seen "yealy" fees from 100 to 200 euros...hence why it is easier to get a card registered at a uk address you control.
no it isnt...suffice to say some backhanded payments may be made...!!!
and as far as i know FTV (freesatfromsky) cards have not yet been replaced, and all indictions are that they may not be...
