with a recent audit that Sky have undertaken to highlight dealers selling subsidised boxes to non-subscribers this could get interesting...

for info here in spain the going rates for boxes are:
standard thompson sky box 225 - 250 - i heard from one client that one installer said they could have a new sky box for 299!!!
sky plus - 325 - 400 -dependant on disk size
sky hd 425 - 500 - but also heard that one installer was selling for 600€!!!

People who pay those prices are mugs, they all come from the same place originally, they are certainly not manufactured in Spain, If i was there selling my laptops in Spain then im sure I would be striping people up aswell should I have half a chance, the clever people would be buying them from the UK.

Anyone with any common sense would just buy one in the UK for peanuts like I do

its the FTV cards that are hard to get hold of in Qty, sky boxes you can buy by the pallet with ease

Why would anyone pay for a FTV card these days?? Surely the advent of "Freesat" has made these redundant.

Except for channel 5 I suppose.

I not sure of the correct term of th Sky FTV card but its what I mean and guess the reason is there is s surplus of sky box in Spain and UK, the cards make £40+ on ebay, they are free, if you can get a continous supply of them its easy money, so not redundabnt but a premium

currently you need a FTV card for C4+1, C4HD, Five, Five US, Five US+1, Fiver, Fiver +1, Sky Three and Setanta Sports News. Noone is too sure what the situation with FTV cards, at least until Five goes free.

if you want to use the Sky recording functions then you need to pay sky either £10 or take out a subscription. (i think you also need to pay to play back any recording yo have made). it will be able to receive the free channels, but the availability of channels will depend on the size of your dish - some areas of spain can get BBC and ITV (the worst reception channels) on an 1m dish, others have to got large (2.4m!).

note : if you are thinking about resubscribing to Sky when in Spain, get your old sub turned back in in the UK, a bit easier to do when in the UK than Spain - and will save you some money by not paying an installer to turn it back on for you.

Your Freeview LCD should be able to pick up the spanish equivilent (TDT) - note the word should as you may require a bit of work on your tv aerial - check tdt.es for TDT availability.

you will not get english tv channels via a TV aerial.

with a TV aerial you will only get spanish tv channels, who try their hardest to transmit the programmes in their original language. your LCD (if it does have freeview built in) should be able to receive the TDT - spanish equivilent of freeview.

if you want the key terrestrial channels (bbc Itv c4) you can either go for satellite (where these channels are free and you can use your Sky box along with your sky card - which you still need to get FIVE via satellite) or via the microwave rebroadcasting (read illegal) which charge approx 20euros a month (yes they charge for viewing free tv!)

or more info check my webpage.
