Sierra Nevada
Recently acquired a property in Fuengirola and took a summer timetrip up to Sierra Nevada. We want to Ski during the winter months.
Can anybody advise me of the general road conditions in the winter to get up to the resort. Is the road clearing effective and do I need a 4X4?
Wiil most cars get up their in season?
Regards

Sent you a PM.
Certainly at times police are checking as you need a 4x4 or chains.

It's very rare that you need chains or a 4x4. Only immediately after heavy snowfall and even then they clear the main road in a couple of hours. There are info signs once you go trough the Serrallo tunnel and there's a rental place with chains next to the Galp station on the left just in case. I go up a lot and have never needed to use my chains.

I have been several times and only once were the police checking for chains. They did turn people back if not in a 4wd or no chains.
The road up to Pradollano is usually ok, if not then the snow signs will be light on the way up.
I've been up there with Winter tyres (two wheel drive), didn't need to put chains on that day although it was icy.
Get your self some snow chains or snow covers before going up.

However, I believe at certain times of year, though you might not "need" chains, they are a legal requirement.
Not necessarily fitted, but to be in the vehicle should conditions change.

only exception is if there is fresh snowfall, sometimes the roads get messed up.
You can check the snow conditions via the webcam beforehand but the road is almost always clear.

Didn't think you needed them in the car.
Also a 4x4 is not the same as having Snow+Mud tyres so just having a 4x4 wouldn;t get you past.
FWIW, I've never seen the police check anything apart from speeders going up/down the mountain.

Re: Sierra Nevada
We go up there 4 or 5 times every year and I've never seen a Police check. The one and only time we stayed overnight (we normally just check the webcam in the morning and drive up if it's sunny and clear and come home again at the end of play!) it absolutely chucked it down with snow and we were stranded in the village so had to buy some chains to get out.
Probably handy to have in the car if you're going to make regular trips up there and certainly much cheaper to buy them online/outside the resort!!
