im gobsmacked at the difference in charges that vets charge here.
i asked at my local vets here in Sax how much to have 2 kittens spayed. (i found 6 in my hen house abandoned my mum...4 died)
i was quoted 148 euros each!!!
after shopping around, the vets in Pinoso (just up the road) quoted 90 euros each!
huge difference for the same procedure

is there a local feral cat charity?

they often help with fees for spaying cats - especially if you are willing to 'take the cats on' afterwards

yeah there is! i will ask them, i dont know how our vets can justufy that price when iv used them for all my animals for over 5 years now! taking the p>>>> springs to mind!

It amazes me how, on average, vet care in Spain is quite a bit cheaper than UK yet a simple procedure of neutering is so expensive. £35-£50 in my area depending which vets you use. No much incentive to keep the animal population down in Spain, shame because it is very much needed

i agree with u. i was mortified wen i found these kittens as im not a cat lover really (altho iv become very attatched to these 2), and i knew homing them was going to be almost impossible,
maybe its because before all the brits came over here the spanish never bothered with spaying and neutering, so they took advantage of responsible british pet owners to make money.
the only reason i say this is because after speaking to my spanish neighbour she was as shocked as i was and said its too much money..dont do it!

148 euros is v expensive even for Spain ,shop around.

this is just a thought, as I know Sax is not too near to the coast but why not try a vets nearer the coast, where a lot of expats live? My be quite a bit cheaper and you could have a day at the seaside while you wait for them?
cats are usually fine after spaying, though they can be a bit naughty and try to remove their own stitches. We give buster collars to all cats now, though they do hate them. Then they would only need suture removal 10 days after and your local vet/nurse should do it for nada!

the vet we used in pinoso was cheap and amazing! theres no external stitches and it looks like the wound is glued! the kittens didnt need a collar and havent even attempted to lick the wounds.
using a vet near the coast is a thought but in an emergency its a good hours drive from where we are.

Ahh even better with no stitches to remove as no need for the collar. My vets in Uk are now starting to do it through keyhole surgery.

yes had them done...sorry for the confusement..when i said i would ask about the cat charity place i didnt mean for myself...just incase other people round here should ask, and of course anybody else reading the forum.

I fear you will find a huge difference in vet prices the world over, the UK being a prime example. The problem there is that pet insurance seems to have turned many vets into charging high prices knowing that the insurers will foot most of the bill and if you dont have insurance, you still pay the same! Many London vets seem to be driving VERY expensive cars.

Without pet insurance, I have found fees charged are much lower in Spain (in my limited experience of shopping around) and the standard of vets I have used is every bit as high as in the UK.

It is like any business I suppose, they will charge what they think their clients can afford whilst still retaining their custom. I have a large number of animals so am rewarded with a 10% discount off normal fees so I have nothing to complain about

i have lots of animals as well and the price she quoted me was also with 10% discount! i personally think they have just got greedy as their prices were much lower when they first set up the practice.
it hasnt paid off in this case as they have now lost a valuable customer.
