Seville

Hi Carol
You forgot to mention the obligatory pullover thrown over their shoulders with the arms tied in a knot at the front. Anne tells me she finds the spanish "uniform" quite sexy!
The other ways to instantly spot the tourists is the ´his and her´ matching pullovers or windcheaters...

"His & Hers" means Canadian.
I am only kidding, and do not wish to offend. But, I do like to poke fun at myself!
RE: Jerez. Do you suppose there is an acceptance because of the history with the sherry trade (Harvey's, Sandeman)?
Likewise, what is the "feeling" with the US airbase (is it still there?) near Cadiz?
There must be anecdotes on how Sevillanos regard "outsiders", too. Every city has these stories (acceptable or unacceptable).

Harsh, Keith. Extremely harsh.
It's a wonderful place to live - vibrant, lots to do, things always happening. Now, if your view of Spain was of something completely unrelated to cities (and remember this is where the majority of the population live) then stick to the quieter places. There's movement in Seville that you just can't find elsewhere

I´m such a snob these days! The other typical view that they seem to have of the Brits is unfortunately the football hooliganism which they see on the TV.
Yes, that airbase is still there. But the americans usually descend on El Puerto de Santa Maria as it is closer than Jerez.

I lived in Vienna twice for several months in a delightful flat right in the centre behind the Cathedral. Often had my leg pulled about the exclusivity of the address. The reality was no open windows on a summer night, but 24 hour cafes and cafes that only opened at 3am until 7 am for breakfast for late night revellers. Now I just have to find them in Seville.. they must exist!!

I´m surprised you say that. I know personally at least six English couples who live in Jerez. Three of them have husbands who work at the flying school, one has turned her house into a hotel and the other two are retired. But I agree nothing like the number that live in Chiclana or El Puerto. If you play golf at Sherry Golf, you will certainly come across English. I do think though that the English who choose to live in Jerez prefer to mix more with the Spanish community and most have lived here for years.

Isn´t it a case of different horses for different courses. We all like and want different things in life. My brother in law lives on a golf complex in Estopona and is very happy there. We live in the campo in Chiclana and love it too except for the bugger who has dumped two old settees at the bottom of our road!!

That probably explains why I have never come across them - I´m not a golf player and have never been to the flight training school. I guess I just don´t hang out in the right places to come across them, and they are very few and far between. However, I have heard of some Brits in Jerez - such as the guy who runs the language school Ten Idiomas. So I know that they do exist!!

Had to put it off for a few weeks (work commitments) but we are going the weekend after next.
It´s already cost me a bomb as Annie
seems to think 2 days in the snow warrants an entire new wardrobe.
I shall be making do with whatever falls out of my wardrobe when I open the door.
I´m a little nervous as to whether there will be enough snow - keep hearing a few horror stories
, but I guess I´ll find out soon enough.
I´ll let you know how we got on when we get back.
(Apologies for the over use of icons - just wanted to try out some of the new ones
)

We lived for 7 years in a village near Sevilla..6 km away from the centre in a yacht harbour.
We both speak spanish and our friends were mostly spanish.
The reason why we finally moved away was the incredible noise level(bars, restaurants, shopping malls etc) and the the fact that the walls of our flat(and not just ours) were so thin that we could hear our neighbours talk and else.
The only way one can make sure not to listen to the neighbours through the walls is to live in a house.
Which is what I do now.
I lived on the Balearics as well as in Andalucia and Catalunya and find that Andalucia is by far the noisiest.
Sevilla is a very beautiful city - that is true.
