selling my british car in Spain costa laluz
Hi everybody am new on here.
I have just driven my Citreon Xsara estate over here from london
I think i,m gonna sell it and buy a left hand drive
Has anyone done this before and knows any good tips?
I thought about selling it to someone moving back to the UK
its a good car plenty of space with 70,000 on thclock
so I dont think its worth getting spanish plates for it
any ideas anyone please
thanks guys

Hi
Probably a forlorn hope. Changing the number plates costs around 650 euros plus the cost of changing headlights. If you only have one reversing / high intensity rear fog light, there will be extra costs to.
There are a number of people that prefer RHD cars for travel out in the campo.
If you have air conditioning then unless it is a bad car, it might be a good idea to keep it for a couple of years whilst you confirm you actually like living here

you will get peanuts for it here, IF you could find anyone to buy it. Best bet is a small ad in your local english language paper, and hope for someone who wants to run it illegally over here, or go back to the UK with it. Keeping it for a couple of years without mariculation, would mean you were driving round illegally here and risking impounding and fines. Just do a search for the other couple of million threads on cars to see just what things can happen.

You might get very very low offers on a trade in from a Brit run garage... and the new car will be at a very high price ... so you pay/lose on both ends of the deal. Just taken my Mazda MX5 back to UK and sold it at a good price and bought second hand Ford from main dealer in Marbella. Interestingly, the Ford main dealer was not interested in a RHD UK plate even against a new car!

Over 5 year old U.K cars are worth very little in the U.K, in Spain much less , you can deduct at least another €1k - €1.5k due for the cost of returning the car to the U.K taking into account ferry costs ,fuel ,hotels, time off work ,recovery insurance, this is assuming you have a buyer waiting over there! and dont forget you will need road tax, MOT ,UK valid insurance as you get off the ferry!!
This puts many expat older cars into negative equity ,even some scrap yards turn them away as they cant be officially scrapped by them.
If your emigrating dont bring your car to Spain unless you have every intention of registering it here.

Minor correction, you need to be street legal BEFORE you board the ferry, indeed at all times when in Spain

Hi Rotor,
The Guardia can and do confiscate illegal cars. No insurance, MOT, or road tax can alert them.
Remember to use a car in europe, it must be street legal in its country of origen.

Hi
Road tax is payable to the town hall for their own coffers. Marbella is cheaper then Chiclana - but I have no idea why that should be. However a smart car here is 22 euros a year!
