Secondhand cars
#1
We live in Carchel, Jaen, can anybody tell us where to buy a secondhand car, we still don't speak Spanish yet so we would need the dealer to handle our paperwork for us. We don't want to spend more than 2000 euros.

Been other threads on buying second hand cars so may be useful to read them first. Remember that any unpaid bills ( Parking fines etc.) become yours as soon as you buy the car, so caveat emptor!

Hi,
I don't think he was talking about buying from a dealer, I'm also under the impression that buying from a dealer should be relatively safe.

Most dealers buy second hand cars but keep the documents in the original owners name. Then, when they are sold, they are transferred to the new owner.
Because the vehicle was never owned by the dealership, there is no liability and any debts are passed to the new owner.
However, having said that, I'm sure most dealers are honest and would do all they could to establish that no debts existed.

now I'm really worried, we've decided to ask a solicitor friend to help us, he'll charge us of course but its probably cheaper than going it alone.
Thanks for the advice.

You will not get much for €2,000. You can check outstanding fines before you buy at Trafico. You can check outstanding SUMA at ... the SUMA office. No idea how one would check for outstanding finance on a car. You take a risk, unless you trust the seller. There are not many car dealers I would trust in Spain (or the UK!). A personal friend of mine who happens to be a well known DJ on ...... (a radio station) is selling a Citreon for €950, it is in VGC. Unfortunately he lives a long way from Jaen.

Do you mean car tax normally levied by your local town hall?
