Default Scooter Insurance

Hi all. I have just found out that if i had a 125cc scooter as opposed to my 50cc scooter, the insurance is €200 a year cheaper, as the kids cant ride the bigger bike!

I thought that as i am 34, then my insurance would be cheaper, but no, they insure the scooter, not the person, full stop!

Does anyone know of/or could recommend any other insurance companies who possibly insure the named driver only, as opposed to the scooter for anyone to drive.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

yes that is correct, I pay 220e for a 125cc v 350e or so when I had a poxy 50cc.

The 50 was awful, dangerous & I kept having things nicked off it as the kids saw it as a parts bin for their scooters post accidents.

The 125cc is super cool & cheap to insure, even cheaper with a full bike licence.

I used Direct Line but will shop around this year, named driver only & they wanted to inspect the scooter & documents as part of the deal.

Insurance is different in Spain to the UK. It is the norm in Spain ot insure the vehicle, any vehicle, not the driver, so you won't find named driver insurance. I beleive this is the law, but I stand to be corrected.

My personal experience.....
Initial view of Linea Directa was very good, reasonable on the price (not the cheapest) but when a *&^£%^ car driver ran into me on the bike, (very apologetic no question who was at fault) they where useless, looonngg story which I will not bore you with.
When I went to cancel the insurance with them they insisted on a hand written letter. That's after all other correspondence was good enough via phone & email.. Needless to say they never got one
I am now with Estrella I pay 173 euro's for a 400cc. Ok you never know what they are really like until you need them but they seam ok so far

Never mind the insurance! Just get yourself a Parka with "Bollocks to The Who" written on the back!
Then you can go to the beach and get clobbered with deckchairs!

Hi

I bought my wife Ferrari red Vespa 50cc scooter to pop down the shops only 5 mins down the road I used direct line here in Spain and a chap came out to the house with suit and clip board to inspect the bike which was brand new and all the paperwork. I tried to get my wife and I onto the insurance but they would only insure the registered keeper I have now gone with Knight brokers for 200 euros for both riders if you ring Sandra 966789268 she is a broker down the south of Spain and she will advise you. The law with regards bike insurance here is very strict as apposed to vehicles where any idiot over 26 can drive your car by the way 18 months after buying the scooter it has now covered all of 344 kilometers

Certainly, with Linea Directa, it is named drivers if you choose that - it's cheaper that way.
One of our cars specifically only allows myself and my wife to drive. The other car document names my wife as the main driver and any other drivers over 26 years of age.

Thanks for this. I will certainly give her a call. If we can get insurance on the scooter for only my husband and I to drive, i will be happier than having to sell it and then buy a 125cc. I too have only done 872km in the 14months i have had it!

I know you can drive a low cc one on your car licence, but you may need a proper moto licence for a bigger cc ?

No, you are allowed to drive up to a 125cc on a normal driving licence.

i was originally insured through fenix directo for a scoot, 2nd year they ripped the arse clean ot of the price (think it was €225 or something daft) so foned linea directa (who i've got the car insured with) - started at €125 talked them down to €75 lets face it, you dont really need break down insurance for a scooter you can lift into a car with 1 hand, nor all the other 'freebies' that can be taken off a quote. only downer is its me only on the insurance, but by then my wife had decided she really didnt want to drive it. that was last year tho', no idea of prices now.
they are handy if your spanish isnt up to scratch with technical jargon.

on another note, i found them great when i had an accident with a convertible rear windscreen - a chrysler to boot, but after initially trying to send me to the local 'autowindscreens' who wouldnt touch it with a barge pole, i had to take the car to the chrysler dealers and they paid up no probs.

Most policies don't cover under 25's by default anyway. The reason it is dearer is you don't need to pass a proper motorbike test to ride one.

Linea Directa just quoted my 125cc ins renewal at 159e, seems good to me but anyone got any better deals before I pay.

Only want 3rd party, named drivers, old gits.

Appreciate any advice.
