I travelled with Monarch Gatwick-Alicante-Gatwick this week (flew out Monday and back last night). At no time did they check weigh your handbaggage, comment on the number of items you were carrying etc ...
and both times we actually had to present ourselves at the checkin desk as we also had hold luggage, so we didn't sneak past unnoticed!
From the amount of stuff other people were bringing on board it seems that they hadn't had their hand luggage checked either - for weight, size, number of pieces.
Have been regularly flying Ryanair to Sevilla recently ... and have made a personal resolution, that I will never fly with them unless it is absolutely necessary ... they have staff members lurking by the boarding gates doing spot checks on handbaggage at Stansted... I felt anxious about buying a couple of paperback books in WH Smith airside for goodness sake (but luckily I was still inside my weight allowance and they fitted inside my regulation size case lol)

I must admit I haven't been stopped much by Monarch but last two occasions at gatwick they asked me to put my hand luggage on scales once I was 2 kg over and they told me I would have to lose them b4 I boarded ,I didn't nor did they bother me at the gate ,depends on their mood I think .I did hear a desk clerk(Easyjet) at Luton moan one evening that she had only made £12.00 commission for the day so there is obviously incentive there anyway,in contrast I arrived late (as usual) at Alicante at Ryanair desk 3kgs over one evening (did not realise ) said I would take it out but he told me not to worry.

Interesting thought ... that the desk clerks on the budget airlines work on commission ... I guessed that the onboard crew do ...

I do belive the commision is only for excess baggage charges etc nothing to do with their salary.

coming back from Alicante last week they were very strict about only one bag as cabin luggage which included handbags and the stuff brought at the airport. Luckily i hadn't brought anything otherwise would have never got it all in the one bag. yet when i got on the flight there was no room for my bag so the steward said i had to put it under the seat in front and rest my feet on it!!

Ryanair cabin crew work on commission for all their inflight sales, they don't earn a fantastic wage so to them what they sell to jo public is important.:)

If Ryanair reduced their ridicolus tariff they would make loads more money ,I have never seen an airline crew pass thru the cabin as quickly as Ryanair which obviously means no sales ,lets face it £4.50 for small beer which I could have bought in my local Spanish shop for 65 cents £3 for a bottle of water ???? £7.30 for a spirit and mixer ,don't care how affluent you are this is stupid even the crew agree ,someone have a word with that tosser O'leary ,but then he is such an arrogant Tw*T he don't care ,Wish I had an alternative ,at least my next 2 flights are with Monarch after next week

O'leary is out to make money for Ryanair ...thats his job and he seems to do it well, I doubt anyone on this forum has ever successfully run an operation of this size ,being in business is not a popularty contest and Ryanair are not a charity set up to help skint/tight fisted expats.
Higher weight equals more fuel consumed so its only logical / fair that you pay more.
If its not good enough for you stop whinging and pay BA laods more and get a better service with "free" food etc.;)

WTF is it with all the whining about Ryanair???? Rotor has it bang to rights.

The single most important thing for any business is to make money. They no make-a-da-cash they no stay in business. The skill is in finding the correct line between charging too little and going bust, and charging so much that you lose so many customers that you go bust.

O'Leary is a clever man. Look at all the free publicity he gets Ryan by leaking bogus stories that R is to charge for using the toilet, charge per sheet of toilet paper, charge for blowing you nose etc etc etc ad nauseam, and all the sheep pass the stories around as if they are gospel.

You couldn't buy that kind of exposure.

If you don't like what he does, go and use another airline. If you are daft enough to pay his food and drink prices on board, then regard it as a tax on stupidity. I do. I take sandwiches from home, I buy a bottle of water in the airport (still cheaper than Ryan's) and stick that in my pocket. I make damn sure that if I take hold luggage it weighs 15 kilos or less, my hand luggage is the correct size and weighs no more than 10, and anything over the allowance fits into my pocket. I do have lots of big pockets, and as yet, any coat jacket you wear doesn't have to go into your and luggage, so I get a bit extra in there.

I then watch all the stupid people who have overweight and over sized stuff, and are obviously far too stupid to be able to read, proceed to react with amazement when they are stopped.

Watch the cabin crew trying to pack all the hand luggage into the lockers. I notice that each trip it is harder and harder for them to get all of the luggage in there. I have a box that is PRECISELY the right size, and that only just fits in when put end on. That's why the size restrictions are there. If everyone had a bag that was much bigger, no WAY would they fit them all in.

Oh yes. If you can't be bothered to have a p*ss before you get on, aren't bright enough to realise that restricting fluid intake before flying is wise, and or can't go without a slash for 3 hours, then you are either stupid or have a medical problem that needs addressing.

I don't give a monkey's if he charges £5 for a slash and £10 for a crap, especially if it keeps my ticket cheaper, and if he bills the inconsiderate, thoughtless twats that have to fill every monent of their lives with mindless chatter on their mobiles to the detriment of my sanity, I for one will stand and raise a glass to his very good health.
