Pay with a Visa Electron, most Spanish banks seem to do these and also the Halifax in U.K.
I've got one just to pay for flights and so no fee.

She DID weigh it ... and didn't have the option of going with BA via Madrid to Heathrow ... only Clic to Gatwick or Ryanair to Stansted!
As for ditching things, she was coming home from a year abroad at University in Sevilla and only had essentials!
We'd already paid for her boyfriend to fly over from England with an empty suitcase, which was miles cheaper than trying to buy excess luggage allowance for her!:eek: Easyjet allow you to pre-purchase extra hold luggage allowance at a more reasonable cost!

Or just take a cardy / sweater out of the case and put it on, in front of the staff. Although the irony (it doesn't change the payload of the plane) will be completely lost on them, a small act of defiance might make her feel better :cool:

Nice to see someone has their thinking cap on.

Firstly I have never had any problems with Ryan's scales, as they say what mine do at home when I weigh my gear. Secondly, If I have a kilo over, that I have to take, I have a couple of choices, and I will either ditch something less important, or as Pete said, fill my pockets, put on some extra clothing and so on. Paying the x/s is for mugs.

Ryan does what it says on the tin. If you don't do what they say, then complaining about it says more about you than it does about them to be honest. If you can't tolerate Ryan's methods, then go elsewhere and pay more.

Personally I value a cheap service that will get me to within an hour of my home, and will put up with a lot to get it.

The dodgy is probably more likely to be the domestic ones. Trying to put a suitcase on them small things is got to be less than scientific !! And the airport check-in scales are owned by the Airport I would think so if they are dodgy it won't be a Ryanair's fault surely?

So yeah it's still wise to be a little under "just in case" (pun intended) ;)

Apologies if this is hijacking, but how do you get an electron card? From investigations that I've made it seems it is only available to students but I'd be very happy to be proved wrong as I would like to get one.

Dont know about UK but in Spain I have one with barclays.es and caixaltea.es
my friend in uk buys her tickets on my card and pays me when she comes out!

I flew out of Granada with Ryan air on Wednesday and they did not scan my pass either, to be honest they did not seem to give a monkeys on anny of the regs, saw people getting on with several largish bags at a time.

It is not the airline who Scan these ,it is airport security ,mine is always done by security at Gatwick and Luton these days

I think Thomas Cook offer one as part of their "Cash Passport" scheme. However, look out for hidden charges if you try to use it for forex deals (see moneysavingexpert.com for comments) or anything that involves gettig cash advances.

I got my Visa Electron card from the Co-operative bank,no trouble.As for the bar code on the boarding card mine is usually scanned at EMA and LPL but sometimes the scanner cant read the bar code correctly and then you have to return to the Ryan Air desk(not the check in desk) and be issued with a "normal" boarding card,so maybe it's worth doing this before it is refused at security and tell them that your boarding pass will not scan!:wink_smile:

Well, as posted elsewhere, my last flight out I saw them actually checking hand baggage size with a special container. The severity with which the rules are carried out obviously varies, but it would IMO pay to err slightly on the side of caution.
