Thank you everybody.....but as you can understand I didn't want to get too specific.
We're really sick about this business, and a friend of ours who's a good friend of that family has been in tears most of the week.
They're a great family who've helped a lot of people and if you knew the full extent of what happened you'd be horrified at how people can stoop that low. But obviously I'm not going to disclose it here.
All I will say, Mitzy and Rosemary, is it's closer to home for you two than you'd imagine.

It is stories such as Pete's that we had read in the past that made us very, very cautious about moving to Spain in the first place and greatly influenced our decision on the area that we chose. Since being on BE we have realised that it is NOT all ex-pats that fit into the category of telling stories and mixing it for others but the ones who have nothing better to do with their time. I am sure that not all groups of ex-pats behave in this manner and that it is the minority who give all groups the bad name but it is really concerning when has such a detrimental effect on a family.
Pete, I am sure that you and your family will overcome the tensions that this must have caused you and I do hope that your business survives to spite them. As Crispy says what goes around comes around so somewhere sometime they will suffer for their gossiping and trouble making. Very to sad to hear about your friends too, is there really no way that they can stay in Spain?

Actually the whole thread on here was sparked by something....which I didn't really want to touch on. But I'll have to now.
Basically a very good friend of ours is leaving....leaving the town, and quite possibly Spain as well. For good!
Why? The actions, behaviour, and malicious lies of people within the Brit community with nothing better to do with their time than try to destroy other people's lives. Admittedly a small minority, but nevertheless, I'm sure we all know how rumours spread.
This particular incident was the worst I've ever known, and actually had serious ramifications even back in Britain for them.
Rumours and lies have affected us too.....in the last three months we've been going to sue some good friends of ours, my wife and I have been getting divorced, and my business had closed.
All totally invented, with no shred of truth in any of them.....yet they get repeated. The business closed rumour has also had a negative effect on my business as well....which was probably the reason it was started.
Yes....it's only a minority causing this. But it doesn't make it any more acceptable, because there's others who'll just blindly repeat everything they hear to anybody who'll listen. Because they have nothing better to do with their time.
Sad state of affairs when genuinely good people feel they have to leave for good because of it.

As for the rumours about us.....the ones that bothered me were the suing and the business closed. The one about me and the wife splitting didn't have much effect tbh. If the rumour had been that we were splitting because I'd impregnated all the checkout girls in Carrefour Cartagena on the same day, it would have been much better.
But in all seriousness.....all the rumours/stories floating about, and quite a few people have been affected by it, have no grain of truth whatsoever.
They are, quite literally, invented out of thin air, and repeated like an Enid Blyton fable on Jackanory.
How deranged must people be to just sit in their homes and create stories in their own mind about anybody, literally relating to anything, and then repeat them?
It takes a seriously disturbed individual to behave like that......and like I've said, I can't go into specifics, but trust me on this, if you knew what was actually done to this family then you'd be horrified.

Hello Matt, now I know for a fact you won't take any notice of what I'm going to say, but being a women I'm going to say it anyway
People reap what they sow, it may not seem evident to others at the time but in whatever way it may be they get their comeuppance. These feeling of resentment you harbour for this person is doing you no good at all, you said yourself to xtreme you have a positive attitude and that you are a believer in the goodness of human spirit. Why waste this negative energy
, get over to Spain and channel it into positive waves,
show these people you are the bigger person. This after all must have happened a few years back and if these people are as you say their memories will be short. I too have a long memory but never would I stoop to the level of others, there's is more than one way to eat a pie.
