Clearly there is a lot of misconception about your residence rights in terms of voting can anyone help?

as far as I know if you are registered at the local town hall (which a lot of people dont do for one reason or another) you can vote

Thats my understanding also ...... in fact I thought by law you have to register at the town hall.

I understood I could vote in local elections, but not the national election. I may be wrong.

You have to be registered on the padrón but you also need to make sure that you are registered to vote. If you are not I think it is too late now as the last day was 30th January.

You can also vote in European elections but you have to decide whether you want to vote in your home country or your country of residence.

No you get hit for local taxes whether you are on the padrón or not.

Its main purpose is for calculating the funding that each municipality receives from central government to pay for local police, schools, hospitals, clinics and libraries etc. plus other municipal facilities.

If you are on the padron, then you can vote in local and European elections provided that you are registered to do so a the town hall, registration should ahve been by end of January, that was extended to the end of February in Valencia community.

Same here in Valencia.

We always get voting cards sent through the post a few weeks before the election.

It's a good idea for everyone to be enrolled on their padron as the numbers on there are used to work out how many school places, police, postmen, not just to fund them. Also ensures no problems if you are buying a car etc, when I bought ours, just took in the padron and they didn't need any other offical details.
