Re: Restaurants
WHAYYYYY , I do feel there is some normality when I read a "Jon resto review" - keep on with them Jon, always good to read and have suggestions of where to go.
IF we do manage to get out there mid Aug hope you and Catherine will still be there and we can meet up. Take care Mel x |
Re: Restaurants
Hi Jon
Well it seems that foodwise hopefully our trip to Altura in late September will be planned around A Chamine, O Pescador and UCA. Many thanks |

I suggest you get there a bit before 12noon PT, to reduce the wait. We arrived at 12:25. And the queue just got longer, behind us, and was still long after we left. This must be one of the most popular restos we have in our area. Finally the daily board of available food isn't always perfectly filled out, so ask the waiter for the fish you want or to tell you what's available. He has it written on his pad. Also giant tiger prawns (Camaro tigre) may be available too, worth asking directly. They are never on the board. Bon appetit Jon |
Re: Restaurants
Hi Jon our trips are always at the end or out of season, this time it will be the last week in September so it will be interesting to see the state of play then.

We are the same, re timing, but had to get back after lockdown. Normally its too hot and busy (for us) in high season. Its true that many of the customers are Portuguese tourists obviously fresh from the beach. However the resto remains very popular in lower season too. Obviously not as much as at the moment. We discovered this 'plaice' :) a few years ago and we've waited previously and always try to get there early. Which is 1pm ST for us. Its a favourite of ours. We could be back out in early October - if we cross, we'll have a good nosh-up in one of the many options :) Jon |

Re: Restaurants
A bit of sad news for those who enjoyed Le Guarita bar in Villa Verde. It has a sign on the door saying that due to structural problems they have to close for the foreseeable future. But they do hope to reopen sometime. No sign of any building work yet.

Re: Restaurants
Good news re Monte Francisco. As you turn off the road from VRSA also the exit road from the Mway....
You immediately come to a roundabout... . The huge resto that is there, that has been closed for decades, is being renovated as a new resto, which will be even closer to CE. Its amazing that a small village like MF has more to offer than our huge CE development. Cant wait for it to open...... Jon |

Last Saturday was the first time I have seen that one used in all our years in ESURI. We await the results with interest! |

we have been watching this for about 6 moths. It started with lopping the palms, pause then tidying up the huge forecourt, pause then outside renovations, pause then external decoration. Now they seem to be going inside but if they don’t hurry up they will miss the summer season having missed all the first communion parties.

Re: Restaurants
Just got back from Sabores de Beira in MF. The prices are now 10 euro and 12 euro for the salmon but it is still incredibly good value for money. The place was packed, especially lots of spanish citizens.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...d1d3bf80e3.jpg Whilst the prices arent as amazing as Sabores de Beira (Aka The Bordello :) ) it is still great value. Eg dish of the day 8€..., They ate on the terrace, and there was an outdoor bar with live music... And a great ambiance. Like you said huge portions (they were going to ask for doggie bags), loved the food.... And the best chips they've had in the entire region. It was packed out, as you say, the waiting staff in a simple 'uniform' .... Amazing that such a small village vs the CE huge development can have so much more. It now becomes the closest resto outside the development itself (and the industrial estate -I dont count the m-way service stations) ... And how wonderful that it is in another country!!! The fact that the other restos in the village remain as busy as ever shows what an amazing business opportunity there is in CE for and enterprising person to make good money especially when one considers how many Spanish regularly cross the border go there too I remember in the 'old days' how the 3 places in CE were packed - especially when there was any event.. And that was with a lower population. Footfall has significantly increased since then! Luckily we have many choices nearby in 2 countries even though we have little in CE itself. Thats some good news... In these new 'troubling times' Jon |
Re: Restaurants
We decided to have a Chinese meal last night. First time in ages... As ever with Chinese, we got full and realised that we would be hungry again soon :)
We asked for a doggie bag, and even though we were paying for the full meal there was an extra charge to take each item away!! Never heard of this before.... (And never eating there again!).... |

Re: Restaurants
We went to Mysterios twice in the past two weeks. The bargain has got to be the half litre carafe of house RED at only 4.50. Nice drop of stuff. The grilled cod loin was good albeit portion not overly big. Wife had the Pork ribs which were good size but only just cooked. Didn't fall off the bone like the Xhicken piri piri place on the N125 near Cabanas. Second time had the pork chops, again okay nothing special. Have not tried the lunchtime menu of 9e. Really nice venue and easy access if you don't want to drive far. To be fair, its early days and both times they were busy. They need a chance to settle down. Will definitely go back next time and give it another try. We like the interior / decor etc and the ambiance is nice but atm the bordelo food is better quality I feel. Chinese in town not as good as it was. One of the chefs has left and the front of house lady is now cooking. Portions slightly reduced as well and less meat in them. Very popular still hence they don't need to try too hard ?

You do not also say if it was a all you can eat buffet or you ordered "plates" of food off the menu. I think they can charge you if your eyes are bigger than your stomach.. Pilling up your plate to take it home for tomorrows lunch.. |
