This is the sort of thing I want to avoid. Until you actually try to use your passport/driving licence/NIE certificate, etc you have no idea if it is going to be accepted or not until it is too late.

Just give me one simple card that is accepted everywhere you go and be done with it.

Yes I can see how hotels in the cities could be an exception

Yes, trouble is there are a few too many exceptions for my liking. Any oficial, beaurocratical process will also reject the driving licence as form of ID...eg, applying for a mortgage or bank loan, buying a car, or applying for pretty much anything really.

I´ve decided I´m going to say I have lost my tarjeta and can´t hand it in when the time comes to renew it. I know the date will have expired....if this becomes a problem then yes, I will apply for Spanish citizenship and get my tarjeta that way!

It is impossible to give up your British Citizenship even if you formally renounce it in another country as a condition of getting the new citizenship.

It's a bit like the Inland Revenue - they never let you go!:D

Incidentally you need to have been a Spanish resident for 10 years before you can apply for Spanish citizenship.

.

That´s no problem. I´m indifferent to whether I give up British citizenship or not. It is the getting Spanish citizenship that interests me more

Well if yoiu want one universal card (which I agree is a good idea), why can't we just continue to have the Residencia card? It worked OK before,.

Everyone's choice entirely, but no way I'm giving up my British citizenship. I'd rather carry umpteen pieces of paper (although why a passport won't do I've no idea).

Precisely. If it ain´t broken, don´t fix it.

Not the philosophy of the EU bureaucrats unfortunately.
