A friend of ours has been told that he has to renew his N.I.E. number. Take the paper he has now and exchange it at the police station and will be given a green paper with his N.I.E in it. Does anyone know about this or have done it.

Are you sure you mean an NIE?

NIE numbers are issued for life and never have to be renewed.

If your old plastic card has run out of Date you will have to go to the police station and ask for a certificate. This A4 sized piece of paper is green. It does not require a photo and to renew all we took was our passports. But this being Spain you should take as much paperwork as needed so that you are covered if your local police station asks for something different to ours!
The cert is for life and does not need renewing unless you change address or loose it.
As Fred says the number does not change.

Im guessing residencia .......... thats green now, and yes they incorporate your NIE number into it now, so you have one certificate for the both

Here my neighbours did it and they had to take passport, old NIE form and an up to date padron

Ah .... and they DID have to take two new photographs as well, even though the new form doesnt have a photo on it. They were turned away without them

Did they already have the plastic card? When we went our old photo, from the card, was in the Computer "system" so there was no need to ask for new ones.

Thanks for the confirmation So it is like we suggested tin Spain it is down to the person or the office...take everything just in case.
