You need to do the google searches in Spanish, not English. Most English people just want holiday homes.
Google on "alquiler" and the name of the town that you want to go to.

This may be too late but it is still worth doing your search for these sites in English, the English community in every one of the main EU countries is enormous and generally there are sites for this sort of thing actually in English. In saying this keithwalters makes a valid suggestion as there are also sites for what you are looking for in Spanish.
I have been in Spain 26 years and although I do look for things that are in Spanish this is the type of search I would always do in English, http://www.thinkspain.com would be a good start.
Hope this helps

For what it's worth...
A long term rental is generally less than a short term but the time of the year you are going over (I take it you mean April 2008) will just be when the locals will be expecting more for their properties.
Here on the mainland, (Fuengirola/Marbella) long term rental charges outside of town are dropping as there is a saturation of properties and so competition has stepped in but in Tenerif I would doubt this to be happening, as it is an Island it probably pushes prices a little.
Might be good advice to have a good look around and get from the owner if possible as this should cut out comissions. You should ask for a contract on a long term rental and make sure you understand what it says, it will help keep you covered.
Hope this helps some.
