Renewal of NIE number ???
I've had an NIE number since 2000.
Do I have to renew the NIE at any time?

Had mine the same amount of time, as far as I know the number is for life.

Any idea what to do if your original NIE certificate has been lost. Is it possible to get a new 'original'?

Been there, done that. You go to the Police station (God help you) with a fresh application quoting the old NIE number and they issue you with the new certificate free of charge

Have had mine since about 1989 and have had no requests to re-new etc (umm - the NIE number, not the bags of sand!!).

Your NIE number is for life in the same way your National Insurance number is in the UK. It's your fiscal registration number in Spain.
So long as you've kept a note of the number and can prove who you are you can visit your local issuing office and get a duplicate.
