regrets??
 

Right a bit of time on my hands before the next viewing!!
Is there anything you regret leaving behind when you moved out to Spain?
I'm not talking people, but inanimate objects that since arriving in Spain you've thought 'Damn wish I hadn't chucked/ sold that'
Just wondering as H.G keeps telling me to chuck stuff out, and I keep telling him I need to take it!!:D

I didn't bring the chip fryer (probably a good thing) and tumble drier, I have been told I may need the tumble drier :confused:

I didnt have a tumble dryer till about 3 years ago - boy i often wonder now how i managed :confused:

We also got rid of three chests of drawers, mainly because there wasn't room in the van to bring them. How we wish we had found room as furniture is so much more expensive here. Also we were thinking of buying a new mattress for our bed but decided to wait until we got here - again, more expensive! :ohmy:

We are only in rented accommodation but wish it had a Hoover. Lot easier to whip that round than sweep and mop:)

On a serious note (that won't last long!) i brought loads of c**p with me, sorted it when i got here and anything i didn't want i did a couple of car boot sales, it was a good laugh and you got to meet a lot of new people, mind you some of the sights you see will have you rolling up !!!:thumbup:

you are hilarious!! i spent half the morning hoovering, not one of my favorite jobs, in fact, i hate housework full stop!! especially ironing which i avoid at all costs!

Lionda, where are you shopping?
We got rid of all of our furniture and white goods in the UK and bought new here. The cost of transporting against the value and age of what we had, made it silly. In fact, everything that came down with us fitted in the car, including our then three year old! Wasn't even an estate car!
The only thing we did regret not bringing was a kettle! Couldn't find one here for love nor money at the time!
Silverchick, you will probably need a tumble drier! Also, washing machines and dishwashers here usually only have a cold feed, so maybe best to leave those behind. They only last a couple of years here anyway because of the water (certainly in this area).
Bedding is another thing, as here sizes are different.

We looked in a local bedding shop for a mattress and the cheapest was 576 euros :confused: Yes, they come in different sizes too! We hadn't expected that. The chest of drawers start at 72 euros for a small chest. I think that is too expensive. Maybe it's because we are in a small town :unsure:

We are in a very small town, found a small furniture shop, he can get anything from numerous catalogues, delivers for free, normally earlier than he says as well. From memory, two king size beds and mattresses were about €550 all in (for both). See if you have a Conforama store anywhere close as they are extremely reasonable too. Don't think they deliver, but they give you a free hire van to collect, just pay for the diesel.

right thats the tumble drier coming then, H.G will hate that he hates me using it, but, it saves on ironing i think!
What sizes are the bedding in relation to U.K sizes? We have a kingsize bed her that we are taking.

Bed sizes are in centimetres. Can't remember the sizes quoted but they do come in different sizes so measure first if you want a new mattress.

P.s. Just realised you said bedding - again, measure first to be sure to get the correct size.

My Dyson....................definitely couldn't do without it!!
If you've got a dog, make sure you bring your Dyson :ohmy:

I even used all my luggage allowance on a return trip, just so I could bring the Dyson over. We really hadn't expected that we'd need it, but it IS so much easier than sweeping; and if you've got rugs (and a dog!) it's much easier than getting down on your hands and knees with a brush.

Totally agree about the kettle.
We brought a couple of very cheap £5 kettles over with us. We're on the 2nd one now, 18 months on.
Only recently, we found a similar kettle in a Chinese bazaar - but it was 14 Euros. Other than that, we hadn't seen an electric kettle anywhere here.

I think irons and toasters are much more expensive than in the UK too - especially when they're so cheap from places like Woolies, Tesco and Argos.

As for bedding, I believe the European sizes are:

Single bed 90 cm

Double bed 135 cm

King size 150 cm

Oh, and another thing......................PILLOWS!!
Unless you like those horrible long bolster type things that go all the way across the bed, make sure you bring some decent pillows (and cases) with you!

Duvets are more expensive, and there's very little choice of duvet covers (certainly in our area, even in hypermarkets like Carrefour)
OK, so you might not want a duvet once you're here - but we do find we use our 4.5 tog in the spring, the 10.5 in the autumn and we're VERY grateful for our 13 tog duvet in the winter, believe me!! :ohmy:

However, you could use sheets and blankets and the beautiful bedspreads that are very popular here (a bit like an American comforter; quilted and heavy-ish)

Just another thought about beds.................................

You can buy divan beds here, but the majority of beds are slatted bases set within a wooden frame - and you buy everything separately.

We bought a king size mattress, plus a somier (the slatted bit) and then we had to buy 5 "feet" for it to sit on.
We haven't yet bought the wooden frame - hence why we needed 5 feet for it all to sit on.
Once you've got the frame, the mattress sits inside that, and then you just have one foot that supports the somier in the middle.

Not sure if that makes sense, if you haven't seen what Spanish beds are generally like!?

Nearly all the beds come with headboards and footboards - not much fun when you're taller than 6 feet!!
We found our choice was quite reduced because we didn't want a footboard.

We paid about 600 Euros for our bed, which probably was expensive.
However, when we arrived at our rented house, we discovered that the beds and mattresses looked about 200 years old, and were only suitable for someone about 5' 6".
Plus the fact the bed base was made of metal springs that sagged in the middle, and creaked every time you turned over :ohmy:
Guess who went and bought a new bed within the first week of arrival!? ;)

I was planning on bringing very little but after reading this thread I will bring two kettles,my pillows ,we did away with duvets ages ago and have nice quilted throws which should fit any bed ,we cannot bring any white goods anyway because they are all integrated ,I will however bring the dyson ,and I will be bringing my dining room set,other furniture I intend to give away to family or sell.
I will pack a large box with essentials ie: gravy granules,coffee,spices and various other food items to put us on, oh and I will pack lots of Georges essentials also.I will also bring all my kitchen utensils and dinner sets etc.Apart from that I will travel light :eek::eek: got to make room for all Andy,s non-essentials :eek:

Is it the Gandia area you are going to? If so, you will be able to buy reasonably priced "english" linen fairly locally from places like Yorkshire Linen.

sorry to say the yorkshire linen place in Gandia looks like its closing down (only been open a few months) there is one in Javea though and also there is another shop that sells bedding along the same road as yorkshire linen but not sure what sizes they do

Shame because it is a very useful shop. Position could be better, maybe that is the problem for them. Their prices and goods are excellent too.
