What documents do you need to take to the local council to get a document which states you are living in the area?
I know that the document I want to get begins with "Em..." but that's it.

Also as I am a lodger will a letter from my landlady be good enough to show or do I need a contract?

We took our passport and two copies and our NIE, that was it. They will welcome you with open arms as it means more dosh for them

I suggest you go to the town hall and check what they need. In some places it's more straightforward than others.

In Altea for example, they insist on a rental contract (if you are renting) and they check every detail of it, even down to checking who is the owner of the property on their database. In our case , because the elderly owner's son had signed for her, we had to get a copy of his power of attorney sent from Madrid! This despite the rental agreement being drawn up by a reputable local agent situated 100 metres from the town hall.

empardrimiento...prob need proof of address, usually the escritura or rental contract but as you havent got either best to ask at the town hall see what they want

Simplest thing is just to turn up with all the documentation (inc photocopies) that you have.
If they want more they will soon tell you. It costs nothing and in my experience the office is only busy at the school year start. You won't loose anything if they do want more, and you may be ahead of the game with more knowledge from the horses mouth.

Passport and copies, rental agreement and copy and application form filled out with the members of family on is usually sufficient.
I took mrsjdr`s passport in on my own and she was included with no problem, but if you want to vote then you need to go in person.

p.s. it's spelled and pronounced "empadronamiento", the verb is "empadronarse". Just in case there's any confusion

Im sure the town hall would get the drift with a jolly foreigner whether they asked for empadronamiento or empardrimiento doubt whether they would correct him on that

Down this way (Cadiz) its called "Volante de empadronamiento" or "Volante Colectivo".
But the word "Emparonamiento" should suffice as they WANT you on the list.

I am in La Linea and all they asked for was my passport!!!

She photocopied it, stapled it to a copy of the Certificado and gave me a stamped copy.

I gave her a copy of my NIE but I don't even know if she used it!

That was it!

In and out in less than 10 minutes!

Nice one, every bloody place and every clerk is different, I always take every bit of paper i have got here and photocopies just to be safe.

When my daughter took hers somewhere she had to get it renewed cos it was over 3 months old.

Yes that's right, they only have a life of three months, hence every September there are queues out of the door as every schoolchild needs one !!

Yes but you don't have to get a certificate if you don't need one.

They don't have an expiry date, it's just that, depending on why you are being asked to produce one, the person requesting it may insist on an up to date one.

Don't bother to get one until you need one - it only takes a few minutes at the town hall to get one when you need it.
