I recall seeing some of the first "release" soaring along the Chiltern ridge where the B4009 crosses the M40. This was way back in the nineteen somethings but they spread, the furthest sighting for me was in Hampshire in 2020.
I have reservations about man introducing non-native species into other countries where they can disrupt the natural balance or even become a pest. Hopefully this will not happen here but long term outcomes can be hard to predict.

Red kites are wonderful creatures.
But it would have been nice if the article had explained what Spain had done to improve the environment for them so that they can thrive. If the reason kite numbers have dropped in Spain is that there's a lack of food, or habitat problems, or persecution by humans

But this doesn't apply here does it, since the article says
Dr Ian Evans of Natural England went out to Spain in the 1990s to collect wild red kites for release in the Chiltern Hills. He said the ones returning this week may be of Spanish descent.
