All I would say is don't assume because it has British 'connections' that it is the best COVER. That's what you want from insurance, the best service, payback, etc.

I insured my UK plated car whilst living in various parts of Europe over the last 8 years through Liberty. Never had a problem with cover for windscreen repairs or their help with breakdowns and a taxi to get me home. Not had a major accident to assess how they perform in this situation. One piece of advice though, make sure you get an ITV done if your MOT runs out while here as they have an exclusion clause in cases where you cannot prove the car was roadworthy (also remember never show an ITV certificate for a UK plated car to a Guardia Civil officer )

as long as went back to the UK now and then for an MOT, the tax was paid and it was still owned by a UK resident, why would they be concerned where it was being driven

Shortly after I arrived in Spain I was stopped by the police for crossing the solid white line in the middle of the road to turn left. I didn't know you couldn't! He spoke perfect english and asked to see my UK Logbook and UK MOT. He said they now receive training on what to look out for. I was legal as I'd only just arrived in Spain.

My car is now on spanish plates. I do see lot's of UK plated cars around with no UK tax on and sometimes I ask the owners and they say "Its OK Mate I declared SORN 5 years ago"......

Brits abroad.....

Can't speak for UK plated cars, but I was stunned to learn when asking a (local, Spanish) broker for a quote that the actual sums covered for various parts of the policy were significantly lower with Liberty (who I'd been with previously) than with the more 'Spanish' and less 'international' companies. And the premium I now pay is .. guess what... lower too! That said I've never had to make a claim so hope I never have the chance to report back on their performance

Read the exporting a vehicle on DVLA site, it says if the vehicle is to leave the UK for more than a year it has to be exported, nothing about taking it back to the UK for a couple of days to restart the clock.
You slightly gave the game away by saying you were living is different countries at the time, so htf can you be a UK resident ?

If you want to live in Spain then abide by the rules of the country.

did I say I still own the car or say I have spent the last 8 years in Spain ?. No I said I had spent the last 8 years in various parts of Europe. Europe is a big place and extends beyond the pyrenees as far west as the border with the Moldavian Republic, perhaps you should get out of the Brit ghetto on the costa and see some of it. I advised the person on what he should do to extend his car insurance in Europe longer than the 3 months permitted under UK policies and what to do in the event of his MOT expiring whilst in Spain in order to abide by Liberty's terms. Liberty were quite aware of my situation at all times and willing to cover me. I was not really concerned at the level of cover as long as when stopped by police I had paperwork to prove I was 100% legal
