I must have missed a reason here but why would firefighters do that for you?

A short; mild response is - because they wanted to. They were from near Madrid...

Reminds me of an ex tenant of the apartment calling yesterday and asking to look out for a piece of mail coming for him....

Sanchez has announced a 11.000 milliones aid package to Valencia. Not sure of the breakdown but it seems to range from 24.000€ for damage to home up to 60.000€ ( this is on top of the national scheme that you use for acts of god which insurance companies don't cover). People have 2 months to apply but only limited documents are required to prove proof of ownership.

Confused on a few aspects but we'll leave it at that.

Informative video on the history of flooding in the area. Seems to have been more of a 'when' than an 'if'.

If needed you can get a reasonable real time translation to English in the settings.

The apartment is empty. only the bathtub - which probably has mud in the surround, toilet, poor plants and light fixtures are left.. A empty shell without doors and door frames - the water knocked them all down..
Tomorrow will start scrapping the plaster up to a little bit above the flood line...
Then I guess wait.. The 3 major DIY shops within 2 miles were effected and/or looted. IKEA is closed but not effected.
The town say that all lower level apartments have to be professionally cleaned before it is again habitable...
Tomorrow a trip back to normality as they have started a bus line into the center of Valencia within 1 km of our new apartment..
Meat, new underwear and prescriptions to be filled...
Be nice to see normal streets and no MUD...

Just when you think that there could not possibly be any more storms or heavy rain it manages to prove you wrong and starts again. Hope that this is shorter and less problematic.

There is an 87 year woman in Algemesi cooking spag bol for the volunteers. Shows that we can all find a way of helping in this crisis.

According to one report the DANA has caused the destruction of around 100,000 vehicles across the region.

At the moment there is little strain on public transport as it is so difficult to gain access to many places. However, as things gradually normalise with people returning to work the public transport deficit will become highlighted..

The use of 4 x 4 vehicles has become very necessary as so many places are inaccessible by any other means. This is the first time that I have been glad that some people own these vehicles.

Mazón still doesn't appear to be up to the job and now people, pets, and volunteers from elsewhere are starting to get ill. This is just like the Prestige all over again in Galicia (also run by the PP at the time), nobody in charge lifts a finger and volunteers helping out of goodwill end up falling ill.

Apparently a student at Valencia University has set up an app to register lost cars and also for the number plates of found cars to be input. No idea when this came into being. Sounds a useful app but this will depend on how much it is used.

Today I have seen people take donations from the tables set up along the main street - baby food, baby diapers, adult diapers and get on the bus and go into Valencia center...
My woman had a doctor cita there today and there is no way these people were effected by this disaster...
Situations like this bring out the worst in people - the biggest problem for me was they were not Spanish but from another Southern continent...
I can see why there is a bias towards them from the locals more now...

Some years ago we had very serious flooding on the Granada coast. Many of the locals that turned out to help were predominately the illegal Somali Looky-Looky men who tour the beaches selling stuff. Ever since then they are welcomed in all the tourist areas and are well tolerated by the local police. We know many of them by name and try and support them by buying their goods.
