Question for the Guy

Instead of PM,ing you the info may be of use to others ?

Pace DS430N will on occasion just turn off, right off to the red light showing.
Kind of think that its a hardware/dodgy connection in the box type of issue to my mind, as I simply turn it back on with the remote.
No contract BTW & just watching FreeToView and all connections "seem" to be sound.

Thoughts ?

Our SKY+ does the same, but always switches back on afterwards

The software was updated to give this auto standby function.

It can be disabled.

Re: Question for the Guy

Hi,

I dont think it is the autostandby option that is doing this...

(in daylight hours autostandby turned the box off after 4 hours of no RCU buttons presses, after 11pm it is 2 hours - this was deployed to most bxoes last year)

Sky deployed a new software version last week...

(check your version on services, 4, 5....it should be 3.8.8 updated from 3.7.6 - minor visual tweeks and some more "interesting" ones for later!)

I bet that is when your box started to turn itself off at random times....

you are not alone - a number of 430n's have also been doing this also, whether or not Sky do anything about it is anyones guess - they did do a software rollback for some sky+boxes a year or so ago when it caused so many problems...

Thanks for the reply/info & just checked that I do have 3.8.8, so I guess that I will have to live with it.
Still at least its not a major issue with the box ;)

Guy you posted a fix some time back for this issue but I cannot find it. It involved turning back to the previous setting before the upgrade.
Could you post the info again as the issue is starting to get annoying.

Thank you.

Re: Question for the Guy

Hi,

First ensure you can receive the default frequency of 11778 - ie can acdcess the full 7 day programme guide, and or get the backgound music when you prss Sky Guide.

Unply the box from the power

Press and hold the back up button on the unit - not on the remote

Reinset the power cable

Wat until the 3 or 4 lights show on the front of the box - you should also get a download message on the screen

Only then release the BACK UP button...and the new software will download.....

HOWEVER:

doing a manual update will only load in 3.8.8.
The previous version 3.7.6 is no longer available and taken off stream
But several of my 430 have not got 3.8.8 and are not switting off and are behaving normally....

Ah then I cannot go back to version 3.7, it has the 3.8 downloaded so I will just have to live with it until I can obtain a better box.
Still waiting for the HD jobbies to come down in price as it will give a couple of channels more.

Thanks for the update.

Re: Question for the Guy

try the manual download when the time is right - they may have fixed the software but not changed the version number - like i say all my 430n have been working OK - one has been on since last wednesday and is used for channel hopping in the office and has not yet shut down.....maybe its worth a shot....

VFR Aug 25th 2010 4:57 am

Re: Question for the Guy

Ok I will do that in the morning, btw I am on 12480 (?) as default now as I changed from the 11778 UK one.

The Guy Aug 25th 2010 5:02 am

Re: Question for the Guy

if you have picture, the DT you manually input is automatically overridden by the sky box, that uses which ever of the 90plus frequencies it needs to use for the channel you are watching....so if you watch sky news the box will look at 12207 - the only frequency for Sky neww, or BBC News on 11945H...overriding the DT you have input
12480 is a group of C4 channels...thats all...

and the sky box will try and look at 11778 everytime you press one of the Sky Guide, Interactive, Service Box Office buttons, as it will try to play the EPG background music, that is on....11778!!!

and normallym, the DT will automatcailly change back to 11778 if it gets even a whiff of that particular frequency....

you only have to change the DT to help the box boot up when it cannot boot up using 11778, where the full 7 day programme guide sites, but EVERY other frequency carries some limited information that the box can use to boot up with...

Hi, many thanks for all your help with sky. My box must be a pace 430 as it was continually cutting out and it had changed to 3,8,8. I kept meaning to follow your instructions but suffering from manana syndrome I never actually got round to it - but it seems sky must have done something as the box has not cut out now for at least a few weeks - just checked and its still on 3.8.8:fingerscrossed:

Ta ever so for all your help.

Thanks for your comments.

I find it a bit strange that if Sky have fixed the problem witha software fix, that the version number is not differnet....like 3.8.9 perhaps???

Well at least they are all starting to work normally again....touch wood

Now you have said that you are tempting fate!!!!

For once, and the proof is my 430s have not switched off, I think Sky have actually done something for a change and FIXED the problem...!!!

Now I am tempting fate!!

Re: Question for the Guy

We have a Sky+ HD box and it regularly fails to record or like last night we were watching a movie which was really good and then found that it had stopped recording after 60 mins although it said it had recorded the full 128 mins. Could the above be anything to do with it? The box is Pace 222.4.5.

The Guy Aug 27th 2010 10:04 pm

Re: Question for the Guy

Chic: This software issue only affected the Pace 430 DSN...which now (touch wood) looks to have been resolved.

Sky HD boxes use completely different software. It is more than likely that your Pace HD boxes is suffering from a known component failure, which causes some strange issues, and this needs to be replaced. Also check all the cable and connections (look for cracks in the cable and make sure and external connections are waterproofed - idealy with rubber tape) - if you have short maybe this can cause issues...

Re: Question for the Guy

I have a friend with a sky box and an Irish Sky card. All OK for sky sports etc but he would also like to watch UK programming - BBC1, 2, 3, 4, ITV1,2, ch4 and so on.

I understand that these can be added somehow and put on a different menu, but suppose he just removed the Irish card? Would the box just revert to being a regular UK sky box? If he then re-inserts the card would it change into an Irish receiver?

He is reluctant to try it - what would happen?

The Guy Sep 3rd 2010 6:49 am

Re: Question for the Guy

An irish sky card, in a sky box "blocks" the UK channels.

So take the card our, unplug the box from power, wait 30 seconds, and reboot the box, and BBC and ITVs will be available.

As soon as he inserts his sky card again, the 101-105 etc will revert back to the irish variations.

I think, I have not tried it for a while, that if he adds the UK channels to servies, other channels, then it knows there is a irish sky card in there and pops up with programme not available, but NOT 100% sure as i have not tried it for a while........

The Irish C4 is pretty much the same as UK C4, apart from the odd programme that will be on the rish channels and they have the irish rights over C4...

but should he wish to add them, services, 4, 4 (add channels), input the frequencies, find, press yellow to put tick next to them - and they will be strored in services, other channels...

For info:
BBC Satellite TV Frequencies
ITV Satellite TV Frequencies

Hope this helps

The box has not switched off since the forced update, thanks again for the tips. ;)

Thanks Guy. The Irish card (apparently) has some advantages but I miss the proper UK EPG. I'll get him to just take the card out for UK tv.

All mine have also been stable so looks like they have fixed the software - but one wonders if their standards know that if they have fixed the software why the version number has not changed.... - argh...a flashback to all the standards an controls i was involved in back in the uk - iso this and iso that version numbers, forms, testing, authorisatoins.......argh......:D

Re: Question for the Guy

While we are playing "Ask The Guy" I am in Andalucia up near Extramadura and want to know if there is any likelihood of getting programmes from an 80cm dish I already have, or if I should just wait a few months until I can afford a new setup with a 120+ dish? We will not care if we only get a few stations, as at the moment we have pretty much nothing.

Thanks.

The Guy Sep 5th 2010 5:52 am

Re: Question for the Guy

On an 80cm dish over most of Spain you should be able to receive most channels on Eurobird1, Astra 2a's south beam and Astra 2b's south beam.

(UK TV copmes from 4 satellites - EB1, Astra 2a, Astra 2b and Astra 2d. 2a and 2b have two beams, a south beam (good for spain) and a north beam (can be tricky in Spain along the CBlanca even on 2.4m dishes!). 2d is where the free to air main UK chanensl are and they are the ones that require a bigger than usual dish.

So you will get BBC New, BBC radios, sky news, maybe true movies, movies4men, chartshow tv and a few others (the last scan I did where I am on my 80cm dish picked up just over 200 channels - mainly shopping, god, and text / gurlies in lingerie channels....but a few gems of channel in there...)

With a sky card on that sized dish you will also get ITV1, and Five, Fiver Five USA.

Your dish, is suspect, will be too small where you are for the main free to air (ie no viewing card) versions of BBC1,2,3,4, ITV1,2,3,4,c4,five.

strobl_j Sep 5th 2010 8:48 pm

Re: Question for the Guy

Thanks for the info. When I have finished wiring the electricity and walls and laid a floor in the living room I might give the 80cm a go. We can get most of BBC through t'internet anyway :-)
