Query re moving

I know nobody has got a crystal ball re Brexit etc but I would really appreciate some advice.

We have received an offer on our house today, so on one hand I'm thrilled but on the other hand I'm wondering if we're making a big mistake? We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we may have to pay for our own healthcare forever so that's not the most pressing issue but I'm really worried that all the UK government seem concerned about is the rights of EU citizens in the UK-nothing is ever said about UK citizens in the EU!

What are the chances (hopefully we'll have residencia by then) that come 2019, Spain would kick us out?

Thanks a lot

No-one can possibly answer your question, none of us know. The subject is discussed thoroughly in Take It Outside so maybe the thought of members in that section will help you.

Why would Spain kick us out??

English residents, holidaymakers and house buyers bring more money into Spain than any other nation.

Hola

Prime minister Rajoy has publically stated he wants people from the UK to continue coming to Spain. Pensioners get paid monthly and non resident home owners pay taxes for owning a home here.

If you have signed on the register of foreigners and have been on it for 5 years or more, you have the legal right of permanent residence in Spain, whatever happens with Brexit.

That is taking the UK only view though. As far as I see from what I have seen and heard the EU is insisting that residents rights both EU residents in UK and UK residents in EU at time of leaving must be sorted out and dealt with the same by all parties to negotiations. The uk has stated if agreement is reached in negotiations it intends to retain in the final deal health care for pensioners resident using, continue Ehic and annual state pension increases. Obviously if negotiations fail and no deal is done then who knows? They have only this week it would seem started looking at that possibility. As for being thrown out I can't see that at all.

As we are still in the UK we won't have been on it for 5 years or more though

That's great, thanks. I agree that it's very unlikely so you have all put my mind at rest...a bit!

Keep your UK house ,rent it out then rent in Spain , this will give you the freedom to move around in Spain til you find a place you are comfortable in , if it all goes wrong in Spain you can move back into your UK house ....simples......good luck,

I dont think Spain will chuck Brits out however it could become more complicated (expensive) to reside in Spain.

Act in haste repent at leisure.

From what I have discovered so far, even if Brexit goes pear-shaped you are able to fall back on some sensible EU laws that allow you some accrued rights. (As mentioned above in the case of Spain.) Many expats have been out of the UK for some time and besides being denied any kind of say in the Brexit vote, UK doesn't really have much interest in you any more once you've been away for 15 years or more. A lot of what is flying about is just scaremongering. Nobody can predict the future..that doesn't mean you should give up on yours. Good luck!

Rotor & Calman, thanks very much for your replies.

I can see how it would be a good idea to keep our house in the UK on, but we would never do it...heard too many horror stories. We know where we want to be but just can't find a house there at the moment :-(

You`ll hear a huge amount more horror stories about house ownership in Spain...seriously!

It would be very naive /foolhardy to buy in Spain in the current political climate , dont make yourself a victim!

Thanks Rotor. In my opinion the whole world is going to hell in a handcart and anything could happen so I want to have a bit of fun while I still can!

Maybe Rotor, you have had a bad experience re house purchase, which can happen anywhere in the world.I can only say that we came here in the 1980,s before Spain joined the EU & bought our house & business without a problem from Spanish owners.Just after bought another property & since then have bought & sold at least six times, again no problem. The system here is straight forward in that you have a good idea that your buyer is genuine or will lose his deposit, likewise the seller or forfeit cash.Personally the only time I ever had a property headache was selling our UK home prior to coming to Spain. The new owner who knew we were emigrating,on the morning of exchange, asked for 10000 pounds off the agreed price or "no deal",so we said"no deal chum".The UK system is so shaky,I think. However I did sell a house in Scotland under their rules, simply by a"given word" to a Solicitor which was legally binding.Maybe it has changed now but nice at that time to see"my word is my bond" working.Don't be afraid, informaniac to take the step you want otherwise you may never follow your dream.

Because you drive up house prices, you don't work, get sick, clog the roads and the beaches, because Spanish citizens might get deported from and mistreated in the UK or simply because you are foreigners... welcome to the new world of Brexit. Best advise is get Spanish citizenship as soon as possible. Only then will you be safe.

But the UK trades £870 million with Spain per annum - do you seriously think Spain will/can allow that to disappear...............

dougal03 and Assanah, thanks for your replies. We are going for it-and will definitely be applying for citizenship asap. Knowing our luck civil war will break out as soon as we set foot in Spain but hey ho!!

What a ridiculous comment. Loads of us rent so have nothing to do with house prices.
I don't work but I put loads of money into the economy and pay taxes here.
In my 3 years here I've never visited the doctor and have always paid for my own meds.
I don't clog the roads because I don't drive. I pay money to public transport companies.
Very rare I sit on the beach.
The rest of your comments are just claptrap. Brit expats here are made very welcome.

The problems you mention exist everywhere in the world but Spain as a whole needs foreigners/tourists. For example, a house owner wanting to sell in a small inland town in Murcia will be happy for any potential buyer, so a few British pushing prices up might be welcome, while the person renting in Palma might think like you, as he or she can hardly afford the rent and will never be able to buy. Of course the person who knew Benidorm as a fishing village and actually likes nature will also have a reason.

Sometimes it might seem that there are too many obstacles but my advice is to just go for it.

We made the decision to move and a week later Cameron announced the Brexit referendum................ we cracked on regardless, found a place and were ready to pay our deposit when May lost the election and the GBP/Euro exchange rate went through the floor. Now the unrest in Catalonia......

Our view is, the more difficult it becomes, the more certain you will be about your decision and it will seem all the more worthwhile when you get there in the end.

My sentiments exactly Keiron  We have waited literally years to do this and while the sensible option would undoubtedly be to wait, we don't really want to put our lives on hold any longer. I still feel a bit wobbly underneath to be honest but I'm sure it will all be worth it :fingerscrossed:

I`ve been lucky with purchases in Spain but I could name half a dozen who have all had expensive issues , things such as legality of ownership, rights of way , planning, and bad neighbours and tenants .
Yes you can have the same issues in the UK but not by the same proportion.
