All this leaving your doors unlocked is an urban/internet myth. Claimed in all countries. Anywhere I have been in Spain are bolted and locked like the BOE:D: not to mention the dogs outside. Ever seen all the ancient locks and bolts in spanish museums!

We have often left our doors unlocked in all countries...accidentally. no pasa nada but there is always a first time. before you start throwing the key away perhaps read about crime in your area, it's not confined to tourist areas.

Well, we lock when we leave for extended periods, but almost never when we'll only be gone for a few hours. Hubby's workshop full of expensive tools doesn't even have a lock. I keep telling him to install one.

But again, it's a rural area. I probably wouldn't feel nearly as relaxed about it in city centre.

Re: Property prices increase...

I have been in villages in the north (Cantabria, Asturias) and seen people leave the door ajar as they leave to go to the next town or village. I see it every time I go to my friends place just inland from Oyambra beach and Comillas (resort places). It's a totally different Spain from the one you see if you only spend time on a Med resort. I'm not saying better (although the lack of tower blocks, drunken Brits, and the beautiful scenery mean it does have its appeal despite a milder climate), and the fact you don't meet other native English-speakers there still less the likes of Iceland or Brit bars, mean it's not for everyone. Spain is a very big country, and I do wonder at someone who claims to know everywhere - it's impossible, and you surely expose a lack of knowledge by making such a claim. It is true that in a city like Santander or Oviedo you would probably need to be more careful, but rural areas are still generally safe in this respect.

There is still the odd place in England where you can do this (I know parts of Derbyshire like this) and I'm sure it's the same in rural parts of Wales or Scotland.

Of course I haven't been everywhere but have been to an awful lot of places, rural and cities (when you are older you may be able to say the same:lol:) Even if it were safe...and who can claim to know everyone personally in their village, your old schoolmate could have a druggie Son and she keeps it quiet! The spanish are nosy buggers, go off for the day and that wrinkled old bag in black would be in looking around:rofl:

Anyone who has spent time on the little island of El Hierro will have seen cars parked with windows down and keys in the ignition as well as doors to property left standing open.
I used to walk into an apartment block and pick a room to stay the night without ever seeing a single person.
Next morning I would go to the local bar to find the landlord, tell him I'd stayed the night and square him up.
I did this on at least three seperate occasions that I can recall.

For example, the responsible youth of Valencia spent 1 week protesting against the education cuts. These were teenagers from 13-18. The right wing politicians, media and police were saying how they needed to "defeat the enemy". The enemy being young people wanting an education. All the violence was from the poilice ordered by the politicians

There is no democracy anymore, only a police state

The same happened in the UK with the student fees demonstrations. The situation is a disgrace. The only thing the politicians are good for are for stopping the young people from questioning the acts of the bankers

As for safety, Spain is a safe country. The most dangerous areas are those where foreign criminal gangs are based e.g. the Costas and some parts of Barcelona and Madrid

As for Oviedo, you'll struggle to find a safer city anywhere in the world. Or at least thats what the people here tell me. And actually that is all that matters! The perception of crime is more harmful than the crime itself

An article here may spread a little light on who were buying those flats in Sesena, and why there was such demand

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...83103P20120402

Seems like mostly young people

When Jose Morales travelled up from Granada in southern Spain in February to look at a new apartment in the Madrid satellite town of Sesena, he was greeted by long queues of mostly young people outside the sales office.

"When the door opened, there was a stampede to get in, like a department store sale, and some were even injured in the dash," said Morales.
But why the great demand? Plenty of property for sale all over Spain surely?

Turns out it's the banks offering special deals.

Banks trying to offload billions of euros of property left on their hands by bankrupt developers are selling new apartments at rock-bottom prices with bargain-basement mortgage deals.

Santander, the euro zone's largest bank, was responsible for the frenzy in Sesena. It offered two-bedroom apartments around a communal swimming pool for 65,000 euros ($86,100), with 100 percent mortgages over 40 years, costing as little as 242 euros a month to service, about a sixth of the average Spaniard's monthly income.
I have to admit a 242 Euro monthly mortgage does sound tempting, even for a colditz apartment!

so the only people who can attend rally's and protests are students,
one that doesnt surprise me, it has been the same for decades
two when they get a proper job they suddenly hand the batton over to the next generation
finally give them all a job to go to with money at the end of the week and see how many take time off for protesting.

The pit ponies I remember very well, but the canaries must have been before my time.
I doubt if they'd have been chirping very long either, with a lungful or two of coaldust.

Well having seen quite a bit of it on different news channels I can only say that they looked like yobs to me, though some may have been better described as mindless thugs carrying and using a variety of weapons and many wearing masks and hoods to prevent identification.

Peaceful demonstrators they were definitely NOT.

Well yes, we've seen these type of rent-a-mob activists in recent student and anti-city protests in London over the years.
They'd be wise to tone it down this year - it's Olympics year and I'm sure the powers that be will clamp down hard on any unrest to avoid a repeat of last year's riots. Anyone who has children of that age should ensure they are not taking part in any demos as I suspect harsh prison sentences will be the order of the day.

I see the Spanish authorities are suggesting a minimum two years of porridge for the Barca thugs.

so there looks to be good news on the construction horizon

even if it is building prisons to hold the protestors sent for a 2 year stretch
perhaps they could be employed building the prisons ??
