As from yesterday everyone, including us pensioners pay for scrips, we got ours this morning, 4 items 3€ goes on item cost not per scrip like UK.

We were in the habit of just walking in with our cards and no money, luckily despite forgetting the change we did have some on us today, despite only being 3 euros lol

There was an article in Sur this morning which said many pensioners had gone to collect prescriptions today and incredible as it seems, they did not know they had to pay! It's only 8 euro max though. For none pensioners they now have to pay 50% of the costs of the prescription which as one poster pointed out is far worse, he only earns 800€ per month and he has a costly drug long term.

Not entirely true.

You pay 10% irrespective. If it comes to more than €8 you will claim it back in a manner not yet clarified - possibly via your tax return like you used to.

If you earn over €18k then the monthly cap is €18.

I can only assume that somehow the charges will be recorded on some computer system somewhere as the chemist this morning was not giving receipts for the money paid.

For non pensioners the cost is 40% as before but if you earn over €100k (I wish) then it's 60%. I am not sure how they are going to administer that unless the chemist's PC is online to your tax records at Hacienda!

Also about 400 drugs are being removed from the list entirely - such as indigestion tablets and some painkillers etc. They can still be prescribed but the cost will be paid in full by everyone.

The Spanish welfare state is a very poor show , prescriptions in the UK are free to pensioners , low income earners , unemployed and most importantly for children .

several years ago they changed it to 60 to keep the men/women divide bridged, but are gradually pushing it out to the 65.

88% don't pay for prescriptions at all, and none of us here in Wales have paid for years!

OK but I don't get prescriptions - they are entered onto the chip on my medical card. Presumably that could carry the codes.

It was easy when you either were a pensioner or not but how they can sort out the high earners I have no idea!
