Default Poor FM radio reception

I've been meaning to raise this topic for years (honestly).
I rarely listen to radio in my car, but when I do I find the sound quality absolutely terrible. Perhaps it's my location on the Northern CB, but I particularly notice it when I return to the UK where I find reception and quality first class. Here it sounds so compressed, often distorted or weak.
I know it's not my stereo set up which is an Alpine unit and Alpine 4 channel amp. Speakers too are good quality. I play a CD and the sound's great, but if I switch to radio I find the sound quality almost impossible to listen to and therefore I often just switch it off.
Anyone else notice this or is it just me?
If it's not just me, anyone have an explanation?
Thanks,

Brian

Two explanations

1. Spain is mountanous, the UK is flat. Do you live in a valley or next to a big mountain?

2. If you are listening to an English language station then it maybe illegal which will explain the weak signal strength. The Costa Del Sol has a whole host of illegal English speaking radio stations

Damned English coming down here setting up illegal radio stations to broadcast their racist propoganda.
