Not a subject that interests me in the slightest, but I like to read Giles Tremlett and he has his say today.

It amazes me that there was any public support left at all for the Catholic Church in Spain after its contribution to the Civil War and the aftermath, regardless of which side of the fence most people were on.

I'm sure bil would have offered similar words of wisdom on this particular hobby-horse of his, were he still around, though possibly a little less tactfully.

However, the church's members are a mixed bunch some of whom agree with everything & some of whom don't.
Fortunately the latter would seem to prevail.

Re: Pontificating
Many people on the "wrong" side of the fence are still very religious, but at a personal and community level. They just don't trust the upper echelons of the church. The pope is a distant figurehead and they don't necessarily follow his doctrines. But they will turn out for Semana Santa and the festivals for their local version of Maria.

Tall Tales: Rabbi Hershel Schachter was recorded at a London conference railing against the dangers of reporting child abuse claims directly to police. He used a derogatory word to claim that false claims could lead to Jews being jailed with black inmates
