I would like to do something along those lines when I come over.Do you think there would be any interest or should I just shelve the idea and leave my kit at home.

There are a plenty of casinos here in Spain, and bingo has just been banned from many pubs round here as it's classed as gambling, and apparently it's against the law here in pubs, so I suspect that poker might be classed the same?

The poker Shergar is talking about is played in pubs similar to darts leagues and snooker leagues.

They play for points, have monthly finals and play for trophies.

Money does NOT come in to it. It is a great social circle and although it is being played in pubs it could just as well be played in someone's front room or patio (or possibly a nice roof terrace somewhere in Spain. )

You are right EX-PAT .It is a very social activity. We play for points over a month and have a final at the end.The pubs pay us a fee(the players pay nothing)We have over 1000 members playing in 17 different pubs.We give out trophys and about £1000 worth of vouchers.
On a smaller scale we could charge subs to buy prizes.and play in social gatherings.

There are prizes so it's gambling, Poker is a gambling game no matter what you play for, so I rather suspect that is how the authorities would look at it. You need serious advice from a solicitor before starting anything like this.

In my local Spanish bar there is a thriving gambling den every afternoon / early evening. I've seen pots of quite a few hundred euros on the table, both in card games and dominoes.
If there is a law against gambling in bars, then it is not enforced much around here

and on that note, when you drive through my local town you can see the lads selling dope to each other up near the old castle, I have seen large amounts of cash exchanged and they seem to drive much nicer cars than me......
