We lived in Playa Flamenca a few years ago, so may be able to help.
Are you looking to move out there to work, or will you be retired? If you need to work, then the situation, as in all parts of Spain, is dire unless you are fluent in Spanish and have very unusual skills. Bars and restaurants were opening, closing, changing hands with monotonous regualrity, and there wer many half completed commercial centres that just coundn't attract businesses and remained unfinished.

Not to burst your bubble, but there are hundreds of people desperate to work there who are already doing plumbing etc, and the Spanish elecrical system it totally different to the UK one, to be legal, all work on a house has to be signed off by an accredited trades man, and there are many thousnads of them looking for work, and charging as little as €5 an hour. Spain is a great place to have money, but not a great place if you need to work. I certainly wouldn't buy anything there at the moment, just rent so you have bolt hole to return to in the UK. Healthcare provision and a cerain level on money/income are needed to become a resident, and private healthcare is cheaper than in the UK as there are far more people going that route. Spain in summer is nice for a couple of weeks holiday, but a constant 35+ degrees can be very wearing, also that area can be very wet in Autumn and winter wiht literal cloudbursts at times. Spanish homes in those areas are not really built for cold weather, and it can get cold on the coast in winter.

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Rosemary

Playa Flamenca has changed a lot over recent years and the residents now have two elected councillors on Orihuela council, who are fighting for Orihuela Costa which was neglected for many years. The shopping centre at La Zenia is marvellous, one of the best in the whole of Spain.

There is also a local forum for people who live there.

That still won't sort out the problems of the huge number of empty or half built urbanisations, or the numbers of commercial centres half empty or incomplete.

I'm sorry but that's no longer the case. There are no longer any half built urbanisations or incomplete shopping centres. The place is full up. They've got their own town hall, police station, health centre and if you're fit enough and don't mind walking a couple of steep hills you can walk to the excellent Torrevieja hospital at Los Balcones.

It's an excellent place for retired British or German expats, the whole place is geared up for them, and they are there in numbers.

Under pension age, you've got no chance. The place is bouncing with self employed Brits, thousands of them, and after a couple of years they have to go home. Skint.

Some DLA is exportable, but not AFAIK carers allowance.

With all due respect and with no malice intended, I don't know if English is your first language, but from your posts, IMO it's pretty poor. If you intend to work in Spain, you'll need a basic grounding in Spanish and a similar standard in English. Certainly based upon the indications so far, you are lacking in the latter.
