Default Piped propane and LPG. How much?

I'm looking at the Cepsa website to get LPG (propane) in bulk and I'm having trouble understanding the prices. Can anyone help?!

Under the section for getting propane piped to you from some kind of large tank they have a tariff of about Eur 1 per kg which is easy enough to understand, but then a different column saying EUR 1.58 per month. What is the difference?

Someone said that one the first figure, EUR/kg, is a variable rate but the EUR/month figure is a fixed rate. How much gas do you get for the fixed rate? I can't be getting a month's worth of propane for EUR1,58 surely? I've tried emailing the company but no joy. Repsol don't even seem to list prices.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Matt, when you say piped gas do you mean the storage tank is on your property?

Hi Pete. I'm actually doing some research at work on LPG prices, so although I don't own a property in Spain I thought that this forum would be a good place to ask. (that and I like the idea of my own place in the Sun so you never know!).

The piped gas that Repsol and Cepsa refer to I think is from one of those large tanks that you can fit in your property or one of the huge ones that a number of households share.

They both say there is a variable and fixed rate, but I'm finding it hard comparing the two. The variable price is in Eur/kg so that's pretty straight forward, but I don't know what they mean in the fixed rate of Eur1.50/month. Is that a flat rate you pay each month, because if it is it seams quite low. It just seems odd and I'd like to understand the difference. Do you know what they mean by it? Any help is gratefully received!

As an aside I've been looking at what they pay in Italy as well, and Spain gets a pretty good deal. A 10kg Italian propane bottle costs about Eur30!

Hi Matt
We have a large propane Repsol gas tank, the last time we had it filled was September 2012 and it worked out about 2.2€ per kilo, it's gone up since then so a good guess from the Cepsa site would be the add the the two prices together to give you the current price but I don't know for sure, as far as I know these prices are not controlled by the government so the market rate is variable, the small around 7kg propane cylinders are controlled along with the 12kg butane cylinders so the gas in these are around half the price

Thanks Pete. So are prices around Eur 2.6/kg at the moment then? That makes more sense. I was looking at them thinking it was an either/or thing. It seemed mad that you could get as much LPG as you liked for 1.5 per month! Still seems odd that a large bulk delivery costs more than buying smaller bottles.

Thanks again for your help!

Not really. The small bottles are much cheaper as they are heavily subsidised by the government.

I heard back from a firm today and they've told me that the fixed monthly rate is just that, a tiny 1.57 Euros per month. I thought that was quite small but there you are.

The variable rate is what you pay per kilo and is usually fixed for a given month. Cepsa charge 1.04 Euros at the moment so maybe you should switch suppliers Pete!

Thanks again.

Hi Matt, I think you will find you add the two together, when we first got the house some 5 years ago we had the Cepsa rep round the house, I can't remember the exact rate but they were about the same as Repsol at the time so not worth moving, it was more than 1.04 or 1.57 then and it's since gone up, there is a monthly charge for the gas tank and they are all around 12€ per month now, used to be 30€!

Cheers Pete. I must have been quoted the raw price of just the gas, without any of the other costs involved. Useful to know how much it increases the cost.

Thanks for all the help!
