We planned to return to England last summer, this is what we did....
We had to have a rabies jab for our cats then one month later a blood test - then a wait of 6 months. We had the rabies jabs in December 2007, the blood test in Jan 2008. Everything ok so we were fine for returning in July. However things didn't work out so a change of plan and we couldn't return until July this year. We went to the vet and asked if all would be ok. He thought we may need to repeat the process as a year had passed but we checked with DEFRA and were told it was ok as the rabies test was valid for 2 years and so long as our pet passports were stamped with the dates we could travel. We just needed a medical for each animal and flea and tick treatment. When we got to the tunnel we were directed to a small office where our paperwork and passports were checked., The cats microchips were scanned and we were ok to travel.
If in doubt phone DEFRA the vet doesn't always know.

Further blood tests
No further tests are required after the first test which gives a satisfactory result, provided the pet is subsequently revaccinated against rabies by the “Valid until†date on the PETS certificate, EU pet passport or third country official veterinary certificate. If there is a break in the specified vaccination programme, a further blood test will be required after re-vaccination and the six month wait (see below) will apply.

I think some confusion is generated as our vet told us we only needed the rabies every 2 years. But this is just for living in spain regs. To return to UK the rabies vac is needed every year.

If the vet doesn't stamp the right dates, then you aren't covered at all.

No. As per the DEFRA site, the injections are valid until they are valid. Different vaccines last for different times, our UK vaccines were valid 3 years, the ones our cats have in Spain only last 12 months.

I have had my pets vaccinated every year just to be safe although a lot of websites say it is not necessary. Most Vets will backdate if there is only a few days difference.

I have read this thread as it is pertinent to someone I know -
NOW I AM CONFUSED DOT COM !!
We also made the mistake that the everything was valid for two years so missed the annual date - meant we had to start again and wait 6 months !!!
