Default Pet Passport

We have just acquired an abandoned hunting hound, found starving with an injured leg, limping along the side of the road.

Otis at this moment is at the vets, being re-hydrated in order to be fit enough to have his operation to repair his achilles tendon.

How much is a pet passport and how do we go about getting one for when Otis is fit and well?

Mine in the UK was £150 from the village vets. Can be had cheaper at different vets but i'm in the middle of no where and was convinient.

Your in Spain so no idea of one there but maybe similar to the UK.

Your vet will sort it out for you.

You need to have him chipped and have all the jabs, particularly the rabies jab. The cost of a chip is usually about 30 euros and about the same for the jabs. Obviously the actual costs depend on the vet but it is much cheaper than the UK.

The vet will issue a free "passport" provided by the Junta de Andalucia and all the details will be entered in that and onto the vet's computer. Whenever he has treatment or jabs these will be entered as well.

If you want a passport to enable him to enter the UK then he will need to have a blood test done after 6 months to prove that the rabies jab has taken. The cost depends on the lab that does the test.

You can have the blood TEST three weeks to one month after the Rabies jab. Sometimes the vet recommends TWO jabs THEN a blood test because sometimes the animal fails with only a single jab and you have added delay and expense of another test compared to a cheaper jab. Some breeds / ages have a high failure rate, so both cat and Terrier had two jabs.

You can re-enter the UK six months AFTER the date on which the blood was taken that led to a positive blood test result, provided all other pre-UK treatments are given AND YOU'VE HAD ALL REQUIRED RABIES BOOSTERS WITHIN THE TIME LIMITS (1 or 2 years). MISS THE BOOSTER BY ONE DAY AND YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN WITH BLOOD TESTS.

Just to explain a bit more...

After a phone call from the vet to say we could collect Otis and his operation had been a success, we went the following morning to be met by a vet with a serious face, shaking his head.

Otis had managed to get off the 'bucket' that they put on their heads to stop them biting the wound, and had bitten his leg to shreds. It was worse than before they had operated.

Although they did try very hard to repair it, we were told that Otis probably would not be able to walk much and would not have a very good quality of life. Especially as we live in a mountain village and have no garden - he had to be able to walk.

So we made the very distressing decision to have him put down.

I like to think that between us and the kindly vet, Otis at least had a better end than he otherwise would have done, and some love at the end of his life..

Thanks for your interest.
