Default Pests

Have just come back to our house on the Costablanca after a 3 month gap.

I've seen 4 cockroaches inside so far - worse than usual. Has it been particularly bad this year?

What I did notice is that the bottom of the WC bowl was dry so I assume the water had evaporated in the hot weather. I suppose this gave the blighters a free rein!

Any thoughts or tips would be most welcome.

Not sure if you can find it in Europe but we had a roach problem when we moved into our apartment in Rio. Solution was a type of gel that one could stick around the house, pet-friendly as we had a labrador. Know you can buy it through Amazon.com but that is USA site . Lasts a long time so you can safely leave house for a while

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Maybe I also need a solution to stop the WC water from evaporating. Cockroaches seem to consider this as a 6 lane highway!

Yikes Luton.. We are dealing with this right now in our YD's recently renovated apartment.. Everything brand spanking new so you can imagine her horror when two days after moving in she found not only a roach on her bedroom floor but a scorpion.. (only tiny... but still) Since then it's been one a day.(roach) No idea where they are coming from either. We have had a specialist in twice. Yesterday he and OH took the place apart. every piece of equipment was examined and sealed if necessary. with the gel added.. Indeed the B****s won't go through water so your dry loo could well be the source.. Lid down should keep the water in though I would have thought, but maybe adding extra. would help..
Of course if the building is infested (tourists leaving food etc in now empty apartments,, owners otherwhere ) It's going to be a massive problem Specialist said they may even be coming in under the front door now they know its occupied...yeeeuhhh ...

YD has lived in all sorts of place's in the last five yrs and never seen anything, let alone a roach. she is freaked out.

p.s Yes you can get the gel here in Europe

Adding water will not make any difference, the "round the bend bit" is self-leveling so any extra water immediately flows away.

When leaving for a long period, seal the toilet with cling film, thus restricting water loss through evaporation, sinks and bidets, seal the overflow and put the plugs in the drains.

This is good advice. .... Also putting a tablespoon of cooking oil into each plumbed drain if you don't have a plug for it, will reduce evaporation (because the oil floats and doesn't evaporate as quickly as water does).

Putting some bleach in each drain U-bend should stop that problem.

Yes we are on mains sewerage. The house was unoccupied during the hot summer. I've sprayed everywhere - that stuff's worse than the 'roaches !!
Fingers crossed.

If there are only 4 roaches then don't worry. Give them names and treat them as pets

Yd's problem seems to have been solved inside the flat having taken it apart and sealed and gelled anything they might creep through.. However she saw one on the wall of the stairwell as she came down it yesterday.. What the H*LL do you do if the entire building is infested?

Move?

In practice roaches usually move with you, inside the frames of soft furnishings, and especially inside the casing of electrical items such as TVs, radios, hifis, where they creep in through the vent slots seeking the warmth generated by the electrical circuits. Once inside they lay their eggs in there.

Crafty little sods aren't they. There are some species of wasp that are equally crafty. A few days ago I finally got round to a clear out of some old files. Inside a ring binder, probably not opened for at least 15 years, I found a beautifully crafted little nest; fortunately not currently occupied :-).
bye bye dicette l'inglese.

We have been in the UK since May and have recently returned to our house in Northern Costa Blanca, the pest in our house seams to be the Red Palm Weevil, found 5 in the house in the first 2 days, they just seam to fly in and have a party, for the amount of destruction they can cause they are remarkable dopey
