I don`t understand why you are asking the question. If you look back on the thread you will understand what we are talking about.

For some of the people who leave the UK, selling their houses is their biggest mistake/regret - perhaps, as you have been in Spain for such a time, you are the same in reverse.

Could you let your spanish house and find somewhere to rent in the UK rather than buy straight away - then you will not have to decide exactly where you want to live right at the beginning of the move and keep some flexibility to move after a year. You also keep the door open for an easy move back to Spain if it doesn't work out.

CBANDY,I have been reading this thread and understand what a very worrying
situation you are in and facing quite a dilemma,I don't know whether you are aware of the changes here whilst you have lived in Spain, its very expensive to live here, renting houses is extremely expensive and these days you would find it hard to buy even a terraced house for less than 100k ,what with the rising costs of council tax and all the other stealth taxes unless you can secure a very well paid job you will struggle here also.I'm afraid it would not take too long before you could be eating your way into your savings, also if you return and you have not been lucky enough to find a buyer for your Spanish home then you would also have the costs of both homes to cover,I have been looking at villa's for sale in Spain for quite sometime now and many of them are sat on the market for months and even a year or two without a sale, and the rental market in Spain is awash with rentals, many properties stood empty.I understand you have a morgage on your property that will have to be covered.

I'm sorry to sound all doom and gloom but you do need to be very aware of the situation you could find yourselves in here, I would look on the job-centre plus web site and try and research the jobs situation here,it could take months before you could secure one, well gone are the days when you applied for work and could get a job easy, many situations require CV,s and a whole lot of rigmorole to go through.

Many family's here HAVE to have both partners working to make ends meet and still find it difficult, and then you may require child care which is both difficult to find but very expensive also, unless of course you have friends and family to help out.

Please be carefull and consider all your options,It must be very difficult for you,I would do some research on the job situation before returning.

Wishing you the very best in whatever you decide :)

I agree with Jandy. we both had to work and we had a very small mortgage. We both had good paid jobs, but the cost of living is high.
We have 2 sets of children in your situation, a small child and the rest, 1 they both have to work and then it is a struggle no holidays and live on a tight budget. The other well he has a good business, but still has to work many hours a week, to have a decent life style.
Think long and hard the UK is a struggle, we missed the blue skies after one week and the cost of a night out was a whole months in Spain,
Good luck on what ever you decide.

So 20,000 odd responses would mean you write most of it though.:p

Are you goin to bring those sad people here too disrupt this thread, you guys tend to stay boringly predicable.

As for the UK changing since 1997 i`d say not really that much, a house in my home town is about 60,000 more expensive, but since 1997 my wages have increased by about 15,000.

In my town in Spain a 3 bed apt, around 100 sq meters is around 180,000-240,000 Euros, my income in Spain was around 12,000 a year after tax.

Spain is no different to the UK Economically, one thing out ways the other, Europe in general has changed the same way, were all governed by the same money markets, unless you go and buy in a developing country, returning to a developed country will pose similar problems.

I can really foresee any problems in Spain that someone in regularly safe employment earning 20,000 isn`t that bad in Spain, maybe you might be better off down scalling your outgoings and ride out the storm, in the UK there warning of hard times in 2008 as well, especially in the jobs scene.

Mind you Spain are warning of the same things.

Were all going to catch a cold when the USA catches the flu and at the moment the US are starting to feel slightly under the weather and they didn`t get the flu jab.

Impossible to say, they reckon a recession hits every 7 years, so far Europe and the US have evaded that period by more than double.

So brace yourselves.
