Maybe its just ME in a bubble.

But everyone I meet around here is adamant that the cost oof living is still better here. Jeez, the example I have earlyier about council tax. £100 month saving. How much food could you get for that!

Nope, I'm just glad I moved where I moved to. Maybe it's the fact that its steeped in agricultural history and more of a working town that makes the difference .... who knows.
It`s the same here Mitzy, if you buy at the right places you are ok.

I refer to the external shape and appearance of the houses which still appear sound and intact today.
Gutting and replacing the interior is a sight different to complete demolition, removal and rebuilding from scratch.

Do you know what £1000 rent in the UK buys us now.

A house without heating since Jan.

Without hot water system now for 1+ weeks.

Electric shower dosent work.

Toilet leaking.

The most foul smell in the bathroom that weve ripped the carpet up.

We have a good landlord.

We go to Lidl or Aldi first. Then Mercadona. Theres a market here every Friday morning with fresh veg & fruit. We buy a lot of stuff like shampoo, hardware etc from the local Chinese Bazaar (they really are good for a lot of stuff like light bulbs, kitchen rolls, fly spray etc etc)

I drink my coffee at the local "chalets" on the paseo, when we go out we dont do the posh restaurants so much now but the menu del dia which as you know are three courses, and around here start from €6. I dont pay more than €2 for a bottle of wine unless its a special occasion

For tinto de verano, I tend to buy the tetrabriks at 55 cents a litre, or experiment with the bottles in the 1-2 euro range. There was one cracking one the other time at a whole 1.50 a bottle.

I'll concede that 55 cents per litre doesn't get you a fine vintage, but buried under a splash of diet lemon and tonic, it's a pretty good drink.

The tetrabrik whites are perfectly good enough to cook with, and Osborne Brandy when you want something a bit stronger. It may be cheap, but it's a lot nicer than the more expensive brandies I've tried.

I can't remember the name of that rather nice 1.5 euro red, but it was good.

The cava we were paying a euro or so a bottle was at one point going for a tenner in Tesco's.

Until they brought in this low baggage allowance, i always had around 6 bottles of gin and 6 bottles of brandy in my suitcase coming home - it weighed a ton - now sadly, i will be lucky to get away with bringing some aftershave without getting charged excess............

What's worse than that is that with the stupid rules on hand luggage I can't even bring a frigging jar of peanut butter in.

In France and Spain I buy wine by standing well back in the wine aisle and seeing where the bulk of it lies, usually on pallets at one end. Move just a tad up on the price scale from the pallet and test buy on that basis.

Sometimes the pallet wine (bought for cooking) turns out to be so good it gets upgraded to the table. It ain’t for nothing that they can sell a pallet full so easily.

Obviously on special occasions I might lash out another 50 cents or so…
