However, there are decent people with a burning desire to teach, and they enter the lion cage as it were, and then, day by day, their goodwill and drive are eroded away by every dumbass parent, every bloody minded child, every stupid time wasting pc pile of crap that they have to do, and little by little the iron enters their souls.

The Uk has a shit education system, and before you start shrieking that it is wonderful because, whatever, remember that it turns out an awful lot of kids that can't read or write. That, put simply, is an abomination.

Well the education system as a whole is again a slightly different topic.
Teachers need to be allowed to teach without being hamstrung with petty regulations whereby they get hauled over the coals for every tiny misdemeanor.
A much better standard of discipline is required.
It should be made easier for disruptive pupils to be segregated from those who are willing and want to learn.
There should be a more effective way of judging teachers by performance and rooting out and getting rid of the time wasters.
Unfortunately many progressive suggestions are immediately opposed by the bloody minded lefty teachers unions themselves and they need to realize that simply throwing more money into the system is not the answer.

Regarding your other point, I find it hard to believe that would-be teachers are so naive as to not realize they have every chance of being thrown into the lions cage before they decide to follow that particular carreer.
From their own fairly recent school experiences themselves, they should surely have a good idea what they are expected to deal with, in addition to their time spent as student teachers.
If they can't stand the heat, then stay out of the kitchen.

Not dumb, just misguided, naive or overconfident.

Have you never undertaken something and then realised you are out of your depth?

I agree there are some deeply shite teachers out there, and it isn't a profession that I would automatically treat with respect, but there are a lot of damn good teachers out there, and I know I have benefited from the good, and suffered at the hands of the other.

Only when as a young kid I first jumped in the deep end of the swimming pool.
Learned my limitations fairly quickly after that.

Agree with your last point from my own schoolday experiences.
Some teachers didn't care a toss and others were extremely dedicated.

That's quite a good analogy for going into teaching, when you think about it....
