Default One in 7 Spanish households hires domestic help

Quite a high figure, and higher still in the big cities.
I know a few people in the UK too who hire cleaners, nannies etc.
Just thinking this is the way "modern" society will head, as all the factories have been moved across to China. Back to an "upstairs downstairs" society.

From what I observe around here people only seem to take on help in the house when they become less able through age or illness.

Almost everyone I knew in London and Barcelona had a cleaner. I think its normal in the cities when both members of the couple are working

My wife had a live-in nanny when she was growing up who lived in a small room next to the kitchen. They weren't particularly well-off, but in the 70s and 80s it was pretty normal to have a "chica" from the village come and work for the families in the city. It is less common now.

Having domestic help is part of the spanish culture. It is a sign they are moving up the ladder. A source of pride for the Husband when he boasts to his collegues. Similar in South America too. One of my neighbours had a cleaner every Friday even though they they weren't well off.

Must be cheap as chips though owing to the massive unemployment rates in Spain surely?

Not at all. In Barcelona my friends paid between 10-15 euros per hour for a cleaner

This has come down in recent years and you can get one in Andalucia now for around 7 euros per hour

I have a relative who lives on the Costas who only has English cleaners because she says she cant afford the Spanish ones. Her English cleaner charges 4 euros 50 per hour

We paid 11 euro per hour(CDS) but I heard prices were coming down. If they have worked for you for a long time you can hardly cut their rate can you

I pay £8 per hour here and it is a woman in the village, if you go through an agency it costs more.

I´m not sure a domestic help would clean to my standards, in fact I´m more sure they wouldn´t. I am a bit of a stickler for cleaning and worry about germs.

I make work by cleaning where others might not even think about cleaning, it does make it never ending though.

It is not just the cost per hour it is finding someone you can trust if things are lying around. I had 2 cheques taken from the middle of a cheque book. A friend had an emerald ring stolen, by the time she missed it the cleaner had disappeared.

When my Grandson was young Daughter had a full-time nanny cum cleaner. She worked 8-5 and was fantastic. She didn't need any instructions just got on with it. One day my Daughter found out she actually had 2 jobs and was taking our grandson with her to another cleaning job

Quite a surprising figure. Bearing in mind that it's unlikely to include all those paying cash in hand, possibly making the true figure much more, and even more difficult to believe.
I've got my Polish lady in the England and my English lady in Spain, similar charges, both very reasonable.

14,4% of the Spanish homes has hired some type of domestic service.
I find that very hard to believe, but I guess Instituto Nacional de Estadística is a reliable source?

The article does not give deatails of the sample size, or the questions asked.
Q: have you ever employed domestic help? A: yes
Q: do you currently employ domestic help? A: no

Lies, damned lies and statistics

What we found was the standards were generally good to start with but soon slipped.

But honesty is also very important, we employed a gardener for many years and a more honest person you could not find.
