Default Old People Homes

Need some info
Our next door neighbour has gone in to a residential home. Now her son is a bit of a shady bloke and was fond of giving his very elderly mother grief lots of verbal abuse, we know he wants to sell the house he has a brother and a sister who live away, but we know he wanted lots of black money I mean lots, so no takers for the house, a major restoration project
What we are wondering is it the same as the UK that the house is sold to pay for the care home or is there some other way the payment is made.
Our worry is well my other halves If the house is sold say sometime next year when our house is complete will we have some one buy it and well start the major works or will it be sold quickly better for us as the works will be over before we are finished well the major structural work.
Sorry its long winded just want to know really who pays for residential care

In UK if the person needing residential care has more than about £22000 in savings they are self funding. That means that they or a relative/friend has to pay the care home fees. The "savings" includes all assets so yes the home is sold to pay fees until the assets reduce to £22000 and then care is paid for by the local authority. If a partner still lives in the property they may remain in the house but a charge may be put on the property to recover the costs when the partner leaves.
