A lot of Brits aren't going to vote here - which is a shame. By getting to know your community, the candidates and the issues, you help to make your town more integrated and stronger.
There are even a few candidates here and there who come from the rest of Europe. If they can get into the town hall, perhaps they would be more persuaded to listen to the various issues, problems and concerns of the wider population.
Monday 16th May, by the way, is the last day to get your name on the election register. Go to your town hall and ask to see the person 'encargada del censo electoral'. Bring photographic ID.

I think your figures are out, where did you get figure 750.000 people are drawing their pension in Spain from UK. Figures I got today is only about 750.000 brits are in Spain and they are not all pensioners.

In our area, there are a number of parties standing on the platforms of getting better services for the coastal areas as our area is run by Orihuela, and they do seem to ignore the Costa when it comes to services, the parties are mulitnational and have Spanish, German, Scandinavian and British representatives.

Another common misconception, that Damian somehow has satanic connotations, no doubt brought about by the film "The Omen".

Damian and Cosmes (Cosmas) were practicioners of the "dark art" of medicine ;) and achieved sainthood for their acts of mercy and kindness, during their travels, before being martyred (tortured and beheaded) for not recanting their Christian beliefs, despite being born Moors.

To this day, they are they patron saints of several Spanish villages.

well , i somehow doubted the figures quoted so have done a bit of research.
the Kyero article has it wrong. they refer to the institue for public policy research where these are the figures they actually mention

Top 10 countries with the most UK pensioners:

245,311 pensioners live in Australia, representing 23.6 per cent
157,435 pensioners live in Canada, representing 15.2 per cent
132,083 pensioners live in the United States, representing 12.7 per cent
104,650 pensioners live in Ireland, representing 10.1 per cent
74,636 pensioners live in Spain , representing 7.2 per cent
46,560 pensioners live in New Zealand, representing 4.5 per cent
38,825 pensioners live in South Africa , representing 3.7 per cent
33,989 pensioners live in Italy , representing 3.3 per cent

However these are just numbers and none will be accurate as they mostly rely on peoples honesty and accurate declaration of present whereabouts.
There are many pensioners in Spain , who have done all they can to seemingly still be in the Uk and never register here. yet the official figures
of persons registered in Spain (274,722) include 90 ,683 over the age of 60, although if one looks only at men over 65 and women over 60 that total is 74,140 which is close to the official cited figure.
The figures for those resident in Spain are from the INE ( spanish national statistics institute, and though not the easiest site to navigate it can be viewed in English too and has a decent search facility. the latest figures availble are those relating to people on the town hall registers as at 1st Jan 2006, so are not accurate in relation to thiose registered to date and eligible to vote.
All age groups are included in the figure of 274,722, of which 29,251 are definitely not eligible to vote as they were under 15 on 1.1.2006 the next age group breaakdown is those aged 15- 19 which included 7,914 youngsters, so some will be able to cast their vote.

Inclusion on the padrón should mean automatic inclusion on the voting register for those eligible, but it doesnt always happen.

Town halls seem to at times do whatever they feellike. I know several Brits who are registered, yet they dont feature as Brits. in fact 1 village claims to have 0 foreigners, but 4 or 5 are registered, they just havent been entered as brits.

Many ayuntamientos refuse to register people on numerous grounds, demanding all sorts of paperwork, which is not required, and as this paperwork cant be provided, they dont get registered. Why? who knows, but
one suspects that with upcomiing elections ,many have done this as they firmly (and often correctly) believe they wont get those particular Brit votes, so they exclude them to stay in with a chance of continuing in power.

The last date to check whether anyone is on the list is tomorrow 16th April,
this has to be done in person, and unless its a very small place, you will need to take some documentation (passport, nie,residencia or similar)

All that is needed for them to check (if computerised) is your name and DOB
and if its´a small village and they know you personally they may check other family members for you ( they checked OH for me).

there was a cut off date to be on the padrón in order to be included on electoral roll for these municipal elections in May I believe, which waas Oct or Nov 2006.


If they check for you , and you are not on the electoral roll but are entitled to be, some forms will need to be filled in , and photocopies of id included for corrections to the list to be made , close of business 16th April is the deadline.


If you are not registered at all get it done. it is important, each village town etc gets money for numbers registered, but other funds/services are also allocated on registered population ( schools, medical services, taxi licences, extra grants for special activities, road works etc, etc, etc....)

I think that probably the majority of us are.

Here in Galicia if you purchase a house and the last owner has not declared that he has technically sold the property, then in the eyes of the Town Hall until you have that piece of paper signed from the last registered owner it does not belong to you and you cannot be on the padron :ohmy:

we had a similar problem, the previous people had NOT told the ayuntamiento that they were moving to France, therfore they were still on the Padron, all we could do was to have our names added to theirs, then the Policia Local came round to ask who lived in a house like ours, we said we were the only ones, he said, OK, and went away, we went back a few months later to get a new padron as the place we wanted to register needed to see a padron form less than 4 weeks old, and then when we got the new one, we were the only ones on the Padron.
