Alicante or Torrevieja would be your nearest.

If you are buyiing through an agent rather than privately, get the agent to do the legwork for you!

With our purchase, the agent sent another of his reps to stand in the queue and get a number slip for us. We went of and set up a bank account with him and then returned to the police station about an hour later to be ushered straight to the front of the queue!

You have to apply in person now.

Are you in Spain at the moment, or still in the UK?

The reason I ask, is that you can apply for your NIE in the UK.

We had to go to Alicante for our NIE number but I think there are more places now who give out this number

I spoke to someone who has a holiday home there and was advised to make sure I have grills on the property as ther have been 30 break in's on the propertys going out of the village there the white blocks low build. But I think they may have been holiday homes. Where are you buying.

First question you are asked when buying contents insurance is whether you have the grills fitted as the premium is higher if you do not have them.

You have to have grills at the windows. The insurance people are very excitable about that.

The grills as you call them are 'wreckers'. The insurance co's will not touch you if you do not have them.
DO NOT get your NIE via UK it takes ages. Apply for it once in Spain and use a gestor which will cost a lot less than the endless correspondence via the UK.
Dont forget without an NIE you are very restricted to what you can do in Spain, ie. buy a car etc.

Do you mean rejas ?
NIE took me 5 weeks to get at Fuengirola, and you now have to apply in person or give a lawyer power of attorney to get it.
