Default Nicknames and shortenings

Can anyone tell me if there's a shortened version of the name Dolores?
Also are there any cute shortenings of names or weird nicknames that you've heard about. One guy in our village for example is called El pollo. and they even jokingly call his sisters las pollas which doesn't seem so friendly to me!

Yes, it is Lola

The women over 40 in my wife's family are all called Maria something

Maria Emlia
Maria Jesus
Maria America
Maria Antonia et etc

and so the names everyone calls them are Mariem, Mariam, Marian etc. You have to listen carefully to work out who is who!

Very few people under 35 have the biblical names any more, especially for the women. Interestingly, if you look at what the 80 and 90 year olds are called i.e. those born before the civil war, they have very different names, they tend not to be based on the bible, but be very localised and depending on the village they come from

Or sometimes shortened to Lolita.

Down south most under 35s still have the biblical names, so maybe this is another regional difference? They are usually shortened so Maria de la Luz becomes Malu, Maria del Carmen = Mamen, Inmaculada = Inma etc.

As for the apodos (nicknames), most men here have them. They are often very direct and relate to physical defects, such as el cojo (the lame one) or el tuerco (the one-eyed one). Some are very rude!

My friend Lolin is really called Dolores. All the younger people in my town still seem to be receiving biblical names or the names that the family repeatedly use.

A neighbour of ours (a young man in his '20s) is called Vampiro by one and all, we've known him nearly 10 years and have no idea what his real name is! Vampiiiiiii when someone is calling him.

He's probably very pale

Someone I played football with was called Mocos because he had a big nose. One of my wife's friends is called something like Fufi and has done since he was 5, because he is fat and splodgy - not very PC

Yes, in the South they are much more likely to be given biblical names still. Up here they are all called things like Hugo, Nico, Eric, Alvaro, David, Mario, Marco etc etc

In Barcelona almost all the kinds have Catalan names now, most of which dont sound Spanish at all

I think I could work that out for myself, I don't really need a patronising explanation, thanks.

In a village we used to visit, there was a guy that seemed to have lost his nose(?) and the Brits always referred to him as "paco no nose". Everyone knew straight away who they meant.

They are saints' names rather than strictly biblical - I believe there was an official list in Franco's time, and if you didn't choose one from the list you couldn't register the birth?

I had a friend in the UK - Christopher - always shortened to Toffer. I guess that corresponds with the usual Spanish shortening of Cristobal to Tobi.

My mate who runs the little bar just down the road from me is called Angel but he's always called Patchi (or possibly Patxi). His father was called it and he has taken it on. Rumour has it that it's something to do with his dick...
