New 6 floor Zara mega-store opens in Madrid
I have to admit to knowing little about the fashion retail trade, so can someone explain why a store this large is needed? Won't it take business away from their existing stores? Or are they hoping to take advantage of the recent rise in tourists passing by Madrid?

The six story building consists of 5,000 meters, out of which nearly half will be dedicated to retail and commercial purposes. The first five floors will be used as shopping areas for women, men and children’s clothing, whilst the last floor will serve as a showroom for collections and other events. Inditex has high hopes and expectations for this building, expecting it will become the referential store for all Zaras in Madrid, as well as Spain.

Zara dont advertise. The idea is that the landmark store becomes a visiting point for locals and tourists alike and therefore an integral part of the city, so the store does your advertising for you
Nike started this off with Niketown in London a few years ago, and then Apple followed
The stores dont need to make money in themselves because they take up a large part of the marketing budget

Will be nice if they start to expand their Mens clothes department. I like the clothes they have but there's very little choice.

It's an interesting tactic. Traditionally that area (known as the golden mile) had small stores by famous brands that were there to advertise the brand rather than attempt to sell anything. Companies would pay to put a sign with their logo in some prominent position, because being associated with that area was good for your reputation.
But Zara seems to be doing the opposite - trying to drag in the punters and actually sell stuff rather than catch the eye of the passers by. And round the corner they have a few other stores as well - including the old Habitat store in Hermosilla. I guess they must be expanding their range quite a bit in order to fill these places. Competition for El Corte Inglés?
